The role includes overtime and potential on-call coverage, requires physical and mental stamina, exposure risk precautions, and qualifications such as accredited nursing graduation, current licensure, and preferred OR experience.","JOB DESCRIPTION  \nPOSITION: Operating Room Nurse  \nDEPARTMENT: Clinical-OR  \nSUMMARY:  \nThe primary responsibility of this position is to provide nursing care to ensure the safety of the patient during their stay in the Surgery suite.  \nI. POSITION DUTIES  \n1. To utilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care.  \na. Performs assessment of patient for specific nursing care needed.  \nb. Plans care to ensure patient safety.  \nc. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic & sterile techniques and procedures.  \nd. Supervises and directs the activities of non-professional personnel as necessary.  \n2. To perform the tasks delegated to the “circulating” role.  \na. Checks room for needed supplies and prepares room for specific patient and procedure.  \nb. Assist in transporting patient to O. R. and checks patient record for appropriate pre-op preparation and procedures (i.e. lab, x-ray, H&P, appropriate consent) .  \nc. Performs and/or directs appropriate Surgery prep.  \nd. Completes documentation for O. R. records, laboratory requisitions, and patient chart including medications and physician orders.  \ne. Directs proper care of instruments, supplies, sterilization, and storage of equipment.  \nf. Supervises and assists with the proper, safe positioning of the patient.  \ng. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts and documentation of same.  \nh. Identifies, labels, and cares for all surgery specimens properly.  \ni. Secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed.  \nj. Controls the general “tone” of the operating room.  \n3. To perform the tasks of the “scrub” role. (Only applicable if OR RN is appropriately trained in the scrub role. )  \na. Scrub, gowns, and gloves members of Surgery team following aseptic techniques.  \nb. Sets up operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.  \nc. Arranges instruments according to routine for a given procedure.  \nd. Handles instruments correctly and checks for cleanliness and proper working condition.  \ne. Maintains sterile field throughout the Surgery procedure.  \nf. Performs clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties.  \ng. Functions in the role of second assistant following successful skills demonstration.  \n4. To function efficiently as a member of Surgery team.  \na. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, working relations, initiative, training needs) .  \nb. Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed.  \nc. Assists in stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.  \nd. Performs other related duties as assigned.  \n5. To support quality activities.  \na. Develop communication skills and promote departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care.  \nb. Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.  \nc. Maintains current CPR certification and any advanced life support certifications.  \nII. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS  \nIt is necessary to perform some overtime beyond regularly scheduled work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, some on-call duty may be required.
