Please do not read this to the students. This is a description for teachers, about the big ideas and key understanding that students should take away after completing this task.\nBig Ideas and Key Understandings\nThe answer to a problem can come from an unexpected source. People often form relationships based on shared interests.\nSynopsis\nThis story is a folktale about a princess named Aziza who chooses her husband based on his answer to a math riddle. After traveling the kingdom, many suitors (a scholar, merchant and soldier) tried to answer her riddle but to no avail. A simple farmer was able to easily solve the riddle and that is who she chose as her husband.\nRead entire main selection text, keeping in mind the Big Ideas and Key Understandings.\nRe-read the main selection text while noting the stopping points for the Text Dependent Questions and teaching Vocabulary.\nDuring Teaching\nStudents read the entire main selection text independently.\nTeacher reads the main selection text aloud with students following along. (Depending on how complex the text is and the amount of support needed by students, the teacher may choose to reverse the order of steps 1 and 2.)\nStudents and teacher re-read the text while stopping to respond to and discuss the questions and returning to the text. A variety of methods can be used to structure the reading and discussion (i.e.: whole class discussion, think-pair-share, independent written response, group work, etc.)\nText Dependent Questions\nText-dependent Questions\nEvidence-based Answers\nAziza is important to her father’s kingdom. How does the author show that the sultan trusts his daughter’s judgment? (Pg. 321)\nThe sultan allows her to choose her own husband instead of listening to his advisors. The author states that Aziza was wise and good, and that her happiness was important to the sultan.\nWhat evidence does the author show that Aziza is interested in choosing her own husband? (Pg. 322)\nAziza comes up with a better plan to find her husband, by posing a riddle for her suitors to answer.\n“Aziza set out with a caravan in search of the one who could solve the riddle.” Based on her actions in the story, what does this tell you about Aziza’s character? (Pg. 325)\nAziza is independent, brave and a risk taker.\nA scholar is someone who is very educated. Which words on page 327 provide evidence of this definition?\nThe words “studied”, “observed” and “learned” are evidence to the word scholar’s meaning.\nA merchant is a person who buys and sells things in a marketplace. Find evidence on page 329 that shows how his answer to the riddle connects to his profession.\nHe answers, “money always comes first,” because he works with money as he sells and buys items. Money was his response because that was the most important thing to him.\nCan you find a pattern with the answers that the scholar, soldier, and merchant have given? (Pg. 329)\nThe first three suitors gave responses that were relevant to their professions. The scholar/astronomer gave a response about the sun; the soldier gave a response about a sword and war; and the merchant gave a response about money and how matters of the world are related to it.\nAfter hearing three suitors answer the riddle incorrectly, why is Aziza discouraged? Find proof in the paragraph that shows Aziza is beginning to feel disappointed. (Pg. 329)\nAziza is discouraged because she is beginning to believe that no one will respond correctly to her riddle. She ordered the caravan to return to her father’s palace.\nWhy was Ahmed able to answer the riddle correctly? (Pg. 329)\nThe text states, “Ahmed too loved numbers.”\nLook ","cbCaiej9FiMyQjDd","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiej9FiMyQjDd","doc",83456,11,"English","# Teacher Instructions\n## Before Teaching\n## During Teaching\n## Text Dependent Questions\n## Vocabulary\n## Culminating Task","[{\"question\":\"How does the teacher guide students to approach the folktale before instruction starts?\",\"answer\":\"The teacher reviews the Big Ideas and Key Understandings and the Synopsis, then reads the main selection while marking stopping points for text-dependent questions and vocabulary.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the lesson ask students to do during the Text Dependent Questions section?\",\"answer\":\"Students respond to questions using evidence from the text, discussing how actions and illustrations support character understanding and story meaning.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the Culminating Task requirement for the final response about Ahmed?\",\"answer\":\"Using evidence from the text, students explain how Ahmed proved he was worthy enough to marry Aziza, using at least three details from the story.\"}]","One Riddle, One Answer - Unit 3 Week 2 - Folktale Reading Questions | DOC",1792132330,28]
