CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.  \nThis book is part of the SIL Cameroon Branch Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education 5th year reading curriculum.  \nOn the Road  \nAt school Hannah had been learning about road safety in her Moral Education lessons.  \nOn her way home from school she had to travel on a busy road to reach her house. As she walked she watched to see if everybody else knew about road safety too.  \nSoon Hannah saw a woman hurrying along the road towards her and carrying a heavy bag on her head. She also saw a fast car approaching in the distance. The woman couldn’t see the car because it was behind her. Just as the car got level with the woman she stumbled under the heavy load and almost got knocked over by the car. It could have been a serious accident. The woman didn’t seem to know that to be safe-she should walk on the left side of the road so that she could see the cars approaching her.  \nA little further on Hannah saw some naughty little boys hiding behind a bush and throwing stones at the cars as they passed. Hannah told the boys that a stone might break the windscreen of a car and that it was dangerous, but the boys just laughed at her. The boys didn’t know that to be safe – they should respect other road users.  \nSome boys from Hannah’s class came racing up the road behind her.“Hi Hannah,” they shouted,“We will be back at the village before you.” They darted across the road to take the muddy track across the fields. They jumped when a loud lorry horn sounded right behind them. The lorry driver shook his fist out of the window. They were sorry that they had forgotten the correct way to cross the road safely-Look right, left, and right again. Listen for traffic. When the road is clear, then you can cross.  \nHannah waved to the boys as they continued to walk sensibly down the muddy track. As she came to the bend in the road a man came out of his compound and started to walk across the road after just a quick look. A fast car came whizzing around the bend and had to slam on his breaks to just miss the man.
