shortage of beef inmany parts of the United States. In Texas, though, hugeherds of cattle roamed the open ranges.Texas cattle ranch-ers began hiring cowboys to round up the cattle and leadthem overland to cattle markets in the north. This storytakes place in the late 1860s,on a route known as theGoodnight-Loving Trail. The trail began in Texas, wentthrough New Mexico, and stretched up into Coloradoand Wyoming. The “long drive”on a cattle trail was thehardest part of a cowboy's job.A cattle drive could takemonths. There might be 10 or 12 cowboys,50 horses, and \n2,000-3,000 cattle. The journey was filled with dangers. There were raging rivers to be crossed, cattle rustlers, rattlesnakes, and stampedes. \nIr was a beautiful spring morning in Texas JamesWarner tugged nervously at the brand-new bandannaaround his neck. The long cattle drive was about tobegin, and he wasn't even sure he should be going onit. After all,he was only 11 years old. However, his fatherhad insisted that the journey would be good for him.\"Itwill occupy your mind,son,\"he had said.“Your ma'sdeath has made our home a mighty sad place right now.I need to stay home and run the ranch. But you've alwayswanted to go on a cattle drive.\" \nJames had wanted to go on a cattle drive someday, but he'd pictured it being a few years from now.If he were \n14,he could be a wrangler.Wranglers were in chargeof the spare horses used on the drives. But since Jameswasn't old enough to be a wrangler, his father hadarranged for him to be the cook's helper.Instead ofworking with horses and cowboys and cattle,he'd beworking with pots and pans and dirty dishes. \nJames walked over to the chuck wagon. It was loadedwith food, cooking utensils, bedrolls, and other provisions.William, the cook, was talking with James's father.Thetwo men had been friends since childhood, and had foughtin the Civil War together.James had known William hiswhole life, and that fact made the prospects of the cattledrive just a mite less frightening. \nWilliam greeted James with a smile.“Hey,youngsprout!\"he called.“You look awful clean!I reckon sometime on the dusty trail will turn you into a cowpoke!” \nJames's father put an arm around the boy's shoulder.“Son,a cattle drive is no romp,\"he cautioned.“You mindwhat Willie says and stay out of trouble.” \nJust then the trail boss shouted,“Check your gear, boys!Time to move’em out!” \nJames stepped into a stirrup and hoisted himself intohis saddle.“Goodbye,Pa!” \n# The Journey Begins\n\nWilliam had been right, thought James,as thousandsof hooves churned up the dust of the Goodnight-LovingTrail.Almost instantly, his clothes had become filthy andhis lungs parched.Taking a s","cbCaiuZqeHScSwVW","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuZqeHScSwVW","pdf",2924404,24,"English","#
