The land produced trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.’ (Genesis 1:11-12)  \nAmong those trees bearing fruit was certainly the olive.  \nThe first reference to the tree comes in the story of Noah’s ark. As the flood waters gradually go down, Noah sends out first of all a raven, to see if it is safe for the animals to leave the ark. But there is nowhere for the raven to land, so it keeps flying to and fro until the earth dries up. Then Noah sends out a dove, but the dove still finds nowhere to land and returns to Noah in the ark.  \nFinally, he sends out the dove again, and this time the dove comes back with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. This shows that the earth is drying up. Soon God tells Noah and his family and all the animals to leave the ark.  \nGod also promises there will never again be such a huge flood over all the earth, so that the people can live in peace.  \n(Genesis 6 to 8)  \nSince the time of Noah, an olive branch counts as a sign of peace.  \nThat is why it is the symbol of the United Nations, the organisation that tries to keep the peace throughout the world.  \nBut the olive tree is much more than a symbol. It provides fruit for people to eat, and from the fruit people can also make oil. This oil they can use for cooking,  \nor in lamps to give light in their homes.  \nPerhaps you remember the parable of the bridesmaids which Jesus told. The wise bridesmaids had plenty of oil for their lamps. The foolish bridesmaids ran out of oil and missed the  \nwedding feast.
