This book is usually kept in the academic office for full reference but some sections will be available here on the Drive.  \nFamiliarise your student with a range of sample questions and case notes (pp.137-142) . Allow your student to extract the most useful case notes for the recipient of the letter using their professional experience. I would then critique these choices against the criteria outlined in the slide‘The 4 test modules’.  \nAnalyse some sample answers (pp.146-151) , taking particular note of the overall structure and paragraphing techniques employed. Take the opportunity here to ask your student to select which case notes were purposely omitted from each sample answer and have a discussion as to why you think this was done. Having a dynamic conversation about this will allow the student to activate their own logic and schemata more organically on the day of the test, and thus achieve a higher score.  \nI have personally found Youtube videos to be an engaging and useful source of instruction for students. The ‘E2 OET’ channel has especially informative content ([www.e2language.com](www.e2language.com) ) . I encourage you to either watch some videos regarding the Writing test before class or indeed in class with the student.  \nA key component of any one-to-one lesson will be your analysis of writing samples from your student. Ask them to complete these tasks outside of class time but insist that they time themselves realistically (5 minutes preparation time; 40 minutes writing time) when writing at home. The recommended word count is 180-200 words. It is a good idea to then correct these samples in class with your student so that they can fully benefit from your critical feedback in real time.  \nLISTENING  \nFor listening practice in class, I recommend doing a number of simulations using the material in Kaplan (pp.23-24 Part A; pp.37 Part B; pp.50-52 Part C) .  \nCandidates are increasingly reporting challenges in understanding accents from different parts of the world, so where possible, use authentic listening samples (medical-themed TEDTalks would be a good idea) with presenters who have such accents. In particular, the Australian and South African accents seem to cause miscomprehension. This is likely due to lack of exposure to the vowel sounds and /r/ pronunciation typical of speakers from those regions. Other voices that will be experienced in the OET include American, Canadian, British (both received pronunciation and regional dialects), Irish and some non-native accents.  \nREADING  \nTime management is one of the key concepts that your student will need to incorporate into their performance for this section. As such, encourage frequent reading exercises outside of the classroom. These should centre around medical-themed content from disciplines including and outside of their own. The more exposed they are to the vocabulary of dentistry, gastroenterology, oncology, psychiatry and so on, the higher the result they will achieve (especially in Listening) .
