It contrasts empires rising and falling with the moral urgency of love and responsibility toward humanity’s future. The text also turns to New Year reflections in icy New York, baseball nostalgia, urban calm through music, a plea for a friend’s recovery, and travel impressions of Israel, linking spirituality, poetry, and shared human resilience.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/of-other-things-read-online/321079/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/of-other-things-read-online/321079.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Patrick","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-23","2026-09-21",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",8,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What \n# “Of Other Things”\n\nCopyright 2018Matthew AnishPublished byNorth Star Publishing \nhttps://archive.org/details/ofotherthings00anis \n“Of Other Things” \nListen,People of the Lake \nOur ancestors \nlived short lives \nThey made tools \nout of rock \nand images of the hunt \non cave walls \nThe history of \nmankind is an \nongoing tale \nFor ever since early hominids \nbegan to leave the forest \nit has been an \nuphill fight \nThe years have seen empires rise \nand fall \nKings and Queens \nliving their lives \nas we all must \nDoesn't it seed that the years \nhave not been kind to our genus? \nWe now have the power to end the entire story \nIf we reach back into our past \nWe may well find \nthe answer to our \ndilemma \nBefore the first weapon was made \nEarly man knew what love was \nWe must find a way \nto capture the \nspirit of our ancestors \nand use it to prevent \nthe end of our species \nIt has been out in classic terms \n“We must love one another or die” \n1 \nIcy New York Night \nThe New Year will be here soon and the airis frigid in Gotham \nThe winds are blowing and people outsideare all bundled up \nInside I pick up a pen \nWrite some reflections on this New York night \nSpoke with old friends on the phoneAnd with the woman who is my muse \nNow at night words come to meand I begin this poem \nI don't know how many of outout there in the darkness \nAlso feel moved to write \nLooking out of my window I see apartment lights and hearthe rush of traffic on the FDR drive \nThousands upon thousands of city dwellers are trying to stay warm and happyin the frigid atmosphere \nCity lights cut through the shadowsIn the apartment building I see through my window \nPeople are living out their destiniesAs I am-as all of you readers out there are \nHappy New Year! \n# The Fate of the People of the Lake\n\nWalking towardswork \nI exercise my bodyand think of early man \nThe Bible is filled with poetic magicbut science has changedour views on our ancestorsover the years \nwe descendants of Ramaphithicus \nhave tried many ways of governingourselves \nSocialism,capitalism,monarchy,democracyWe mustn't give up \nEarly man discovered toolsnow mankind has the tools todestroy ourselvesLet us pray thatour speciesis not eliminatedby our own handLet us taste joy \nin our holidays -in our strengthsand in our love for each otherour ancestors mademistakesIt is up to us to correct them \n# “Of Other Things”\n\nBaseball Dreams \nI remember as \na kid \nmy mother gave my copy \nof Frank Waldman's \n\"Bonus Pitcher\" \nto the school book fair \nI had to buy it back \nfor a quarter \nThe book told the tale \nof how a \"bonus baby\"won the respect of \nthose who rejected him at first \nAlso,it told the tale \nof the Brooklyn Dodgers \ndefeating the Boston Red Sox \nin a World Series \nI have re-read the bookduring hard moments in my lifeBaseball defines \nAmerica \nOur national pastime \nis also enshrined \nin the movie\"Field of Dreams\" \nAs for myself-I only played catcher \nfor a short while in the Little Leagues \nand cried as a kid when the Mets lost(as they usually did inthe early days) \nI heard stories of ball players from years ago \nand they still reverberate in my \nin my mind \nOlder now-the best I could do now \nis whack some softballs at the batting cages \nTime wears us all down \nBaseball diamonds still shine brightlyin the minds of most Americans \n# “Of Other Things”\n\nUrban Joy \n# A day in the city\n\nWatching beautiful women walk byLife is not too bad! \nNew Year City Evening \nAfter a good mealI listen to DvorakEase my troubled mind \n# Friend in Trouble\n\nHe is racked with painAnd I cannot really help himPray he recovers \n# “Of Other Things”\n\nRemembering Israel \nI have been to the Holy LandBut only for a few daysSaw the path Jesus walked \nSaw where the brave Jewish soldiers soldiersmade their last stand against the Roman legions \nSaw the wailing wall-the last remnant to King Solomon's mighty temple!Went to
