Fro,U.N.B.Libraries \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nThe publication of the Odes of Joseph Warton and William Collinsin 1746 is a story often told, but almost always with Collins'poetryin view. The two young poets, who had been close friends at bothWinchester and Oxford, met at the Guildford Races in Surreyin late spring and planned a joint poetic venture that Joseph de-scribed in a letter to his brother Thomas: \nDear Tom, \nYou will wonder to see my name in an advertisement next week,soI thought I would apprize you of it.The case was this.Collins met mein Surrey,at Guildford Races, when I wrote out for him my Odes, and he likewise communicated some of his to me:and being both invery high spirits we took courage, resolved to join our forces, and topublish them immediately.I flatter myself that I shall lose no honourby this publication, because I believe these Odes,as they now stand, are infinitely the best things I ever wrote. You will see a very prettyone of Collins's,on the death of Colonel Ross before Tournay. It isaddressed to a lady who was Ross's intimate acquaintance, and whoby the way is Miss Bett Goddard.Collins is not to publish the Odesunless he gets ten guineas for them. \nI returned from Milford last night, where I left Collins with mymother and sister, and he sets out to-day for London.I must now tellyou that I have sent him your imitation of Horace's Blandusian Foun-tain,to be printed amongst ours, and which you shall own or not asyou think proper.I would not have done this without your consent, but because I think it very poetically and correctly done, and willgetyou honour. \nYou will let me know what the Oxford critics say. \nJoseph Warton's biographer,John Wooll, describes this letter as\"Without a date of time or place,\"but the most likely date is May20-22(when the most important of the Guildford Races were held),and in 1746(as witnessed by the impatience of the two youngwriters to publish their work“immediately”).Joseph originallyplanned to publish on his own.On 18 March 1746 he informedhis brother that he had shown his odes to Joseph Spence:\"I shewed \nall of them to him,&he strongly advised me not to publish thisSeason.I gave him &Dr Young Subscription papers.\"Warton'smeeting with Collins resulted in a sudden change in his publishingplans, but the advertisement mentioned by Warton has never beenlocated, and the joint venture—anticipating the collaborative for-mat of the Lyrical Ballads—was at some point replaced by a deci-sion that the two poets should submit their manuscripts to RobertDodsley at the same time but separately. \nIt is uncertain why Dodsley agreed to publish Warton's volumeof poems and not Collins’,but his choice proved to be a sound one.Warton's Odes on
