This is not unique to King County , but occurs throughout every County Extension in the nation. In their applications , volunteers attest to fulfilling service and continuing education requirements , confirm agreement to guidelines for discussing integrated pest management and pesticide use and , as in King County , may also complete optional program administration items , such as electing to volunteer at a specific plant advice clinic and demonstration garden. \nCertification of Extension Master Gardeners by the state of Washington reinforces our credibility and has kept the Program relevant through a 50-year history with many changing community and environmental needs. Let’s look at each of the annual certification requirements. \nRead the full article \nShorewood High School Culinary Arts Garden: A Place of Change and Growth \n…by SWHS Culinary Arts Garden Team \nWhen Culinary Arts students at Shorewood High School (SWHS) need fresh produce for classroom assignments , they can open the door and step into their garden to harvest what’s needed. The Shorewood High School Culinary Arts Garden is a collaboration between the students and Extension Master Gardener ( EMG) volunteers. EMGs give talks in the classroom , work in the \ngarden and do larger projects and maintenance. \nThis year, in its high school campus environment, the Culinary Garden needed adequate , secure storage and timely replacement of deteriorating garden boxes. It also needed improved accessibility for special-needs students. This past summer, in addition to tending crops , our Master Gardener group completed several projects that addressed these needs. \nRead the full article \nPhoto (left to right): EMG Lee Keim and EMG Katherine Anderson build the new pathway. Originally these workshops were held in person at the small Ranger Station near the Bellevue Demonstration Garden; then they moved to Zoom during the pandemic. Since that time , the number of class participants has increased and these classes will no longer fit in the Ranger Station. Additionally , the Bellevue Demonstration Garden is planning to resume in-person , hands-on , Saturday demonstrations at the demo garden , yay!! So now we’ll need a new name to differentiate between the two different educational opportunities. \nRead the full article \n2024 Kent Hop Picking Festival \n…by Extension Master Gardener Intern Chris Ensor \nA three-hour WSU Extension King County Master Gardener hop picking festival was held at the Neely-Soames Homestead Heritage Demonstration Garden on September 7. This was possibly the first hop harvest celebration in Kent since the crop failure of 1891 ended this major industry. \n18 visitors and 10 Master Gardeners and Interns attended the event. In addition , we welcomed three representatives from our partner organizations – the Greater Kent Historical Society , All Grain Brewing and the Impaling Alers – \nalong with the president of Kent City Council. \nRead the full article \nPhoto: Master Gardeners cut down the Cascade hop bines.
