\nDIRECTIONS \nEach passage or pair of passages below is followed by a number of questions. After readingeach passage or pair, choose the best answer to each question based on what is stated orimplied in the passage or passages and in any accompanying graphics (such as a table orgraph). \n## Questions 1-10 are based on the followingpassage.\n\nThis passage is adapted from Willa Cather,OPioneers!Originally published in 1913.John Bergson is a farmer on hisdeathbed.Alexandra Bergson is his teenage daughter. \nIn eleven long years John Bergson had made butlittle impression upon the wild land he had come totame. It was still a wild thing that had its ugly moods;Line and no one knew when they were likely to come,or \n5 why.Mischance hung over it.Its Genius wasunfriendly to man.The sick man was feeling this ashe lay looking out of the window, after the doctor hadleft him,on the day following Alexandra's trip totown. There it lay outside his door, the same land,the10 same lead-colored miles. He knew every ridge anddraw and gully between him and the horizon. To thesouth, his plowed fields;to the east, the sod stables, the cattle corral, the pond,—and then the grass. \nJohn Bergson had the Old-World belief that land,15 in itself,is desirable. But this land was an enigma.Itwas like a horse that no one knows how to break toharness, that runs wild and kicks things to pieces.Hehad an idea that no one understood how to farm itproperly, and this he often discussed with Alexandra.20 Their neighbors, certainly, knew even less aboutfarming than he did. Many of them had never workedon a farm until they took up their homesteads.Theyhad been handwerkers at home;tailors,locksmiths,joiners,cigar-makers,etc.Bergson himself had25 worked in a shipyard. \nFor weeks,John Bergson had been thinking aboutthese things. His bed stood in the sitting-room,next \nto the kitchen.Through the day, while the baking andwashing and ironing were going on,the father lay30 and looked up at the roof beams that he himself hadhewn,or out at the cattle in the corral. He countedthe cattle over and over.It diverted him to speculateas to how much weight each of the steers wouldprobably put on by spring. He often called his35 daughter in to talk to her about this.BeforeAlexandra was twelve years old she had begun to be ahelp to him,and as she grew older he had come todepend more and more upon her resourcefulness andgood judgment. His boys were willing enough to40 work, but when he talked with them they usuallyirritated him.It was Alexandra who read the papersand followed the markets, and who learned by themistakes of their neighbors. It was Alexandra whocould always tell about what it had cost to fatten each45 steer, and who could guess the weight of a hog beforeit went on the scales closer than John Bergsonhimself.Lou and Oscar were industrious, but hecould never teach them to use their heads about theirwork.Alexandra, her father often said to himself,was50 like her grandfather;which was his way of saying thatshe was intelligent.John Bergson's father had been ashipbuilder,a man of considerable force and of somefortune.Late in life he married a second time,aStockholm woman of questionable character,much55 younger than he,who goaded him into every sort ofextravagance. On the shipbuilder's part, this marriagewas an infatuation, the despairing folly of a powerfulman who cannot bear to grow old.In a few years hisunprincipled wife warped the probity of a lifetime. \n1 \n60 He speculated, lost his own fortune and fundsentrusted to him by poor seafaring men,and dieddisgraced, leaving his children nothing. But when allwas said,he had come up from the sea himself, hadbuilt up a proud little business with no capital but his65 own skill and foresight, and had proved himself aman.In his daughter,John Bergson recognized thestrength of will,a","cbCaisnKeAPfBehH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisnKeAPfBehH","pdf",10008990,59,"English","# Reading Test\n##
