The narrative then shifts to Lieutenant Eve Dallas in 2060, where a wealthy holiday-week setting contrasts with a carefully staged death in a lavish bedroom. Evidence includes the victim’s coordinated appearance and a taunting message on the wall declaring “Justice has been served.”",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/","Story & Novel",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/obsession-in-death-prologue/319448/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/obsession-in-death-prologue/319448.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Rowan","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-02","2026-09-20",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",16,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What is revealed in the prologue about the killer’s mindset?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"The prologue frames the killer as believing killing is both rewarding and purposeful justice, driven by devotion to someone admired and a sense of spiritual connection.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"Where does Lieutenant Eve Dallas first encounter the case?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"Eve Dallas finds the body in a luxurious bedroom with elaborate décor, where the death appears staged amid holiday-week city activity.",{"name":70,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":71},"What message is left near the victim, and why is it significant?",{"text":72,"@type":64},"A wall message addressed to “Lieutenant Eve Dallas” declares the victim’s life was a lie and that justice has been served, positioning Eve as directly involved or implicated.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":32,"og:type":75,"og:title":10,"og:site_name":45,"og:description":12},"article",{"robots":77,"canonical":32},"index,follow",{"doc_id":79,"site_id":7},319448,1790216973,{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":83},"success",[84,87,91,95,100,105,110,115,120,123,127],{"id":22,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":29,"show_sort_weight":85,"slug":86},90,"story-novel",{"id":26,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":88,"show_sort_weight":89,"slug":90},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":33,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":92,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":96,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":101,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":102,"show_sort_weight":103,"slug":104},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":106,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":107,"show_sort_weight":108,"slug":109},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":111,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":112,"show_sort_weight":113,"slug":114},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":116,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":117,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":119},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":118,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":122},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":126},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":128,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":130},19,"General","general",{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":132},{"doc_id":79,"user_id":133,"nickname":42,"user_avatar":134,"doc_module":4,"category_id":22,"category_name":29,"doc_title":10,"doc_description":12,"doc_content":135,"file_id":136,"file_url":137,"file_type":138,"file_size":139,"view_count":55,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":22,"is_downloadable":22,"audit_status":22,"page_count":140,"language":141,"language_code":8,"site_id":7,"html_lang":8,"table_of_contents":142,"faqs":143,"seo_title":144,"seo_description":12,"update_tm":145,"read_time":146},1099514067415,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/avatar/100002539d78ffe74a7?x-image-process=image/resize,m_fixed,w_180,h_180&k=1779092875211072502","Obsession in Death \nTable of Contents \nEpigraph \nPrologue 1 \n2 \n3 \n4 \n5 \n6 \n7 \n8 \n9 \n10 \n11 \n12 \n13 \n14 \n15 \n16 \n17 \n18 \n19 \n20 \n21 \n22 \n23 \nAbout the Author \nAlso by Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb \nCopyright \nSome dire misfortune to portend, No enemy can match a friend. \nJONATHAN SWIFT \nBut Evil saith to Good: My brother… \nALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE \nPROLOGUE \nKilling was easier than I thought it could be, and a lot more rewarding. I finally feel as if I’ve done something important, something that deserves real attention. All my life I’ve tried, done my best, but no one ever truly appreciated my efforts, really saw me for who and what I was. \nI can say objectively, honestly, I did a good and efficient job on this new, important project, start to finish. \nThere were times during the weeks and weeks – months really – of planning, of selecting, of working out all the tiny details, I felt impatient, even annoyed with myself. \nThere were times I doubted, times I nearly lost my courage and my focus. It’s too easy to become discouraged when no one values your skills and your efforts. \nBut I see now this time (and maybe it’s been years in the developing really) was all worth it. \nThe time spent will be worth it again, as all that preparation and planning is done on all who come next. \nBecause I spent those weeks watching the target, learning her routine, made the effort to get into her building long before tonight, and made the investment in the very best equipment, practiced all the steps for hours, I have my first success. \nMy first weight on the scale toward balance. My first tribute, I suppose, in honor of my friend and partner. \nThat icy blonde bitch deserved to die. \nDidn’t Shakespeare say something about killing all the lawyers? I should look it up. In any case, I’ve taken care of one, and she won’t be around to make any more money off the scum she represented, or most important of all, she’ll never insult or demean the person I most admire. The person who deserved her RESPECT! \nI’m honored to have played a part in righting the wrong, in bringing true justice to the woman who, due to the constraints of her job, is unable tomete out justice for herself. \nI will be her avenger, her champion. \nSoon, she’ll know there is someone who will stand up for her, do what needs to be done. When she sees my message, she’ll know she has someone behind her, who understands, admires, and respects her above all others. As \nno one ever did for me. Our connection is so strong, so intense, I can often read her thoughts. I wonder if she can read mine. \nSometimes, late at night, I sense she’s with me, right here with me. How else could I have known where to start, and just what to do? \nOurs is a spiritual bond I treasure, something deep and strong, and older than time. We are, in essence, the same person, two sides to one coin. \nDeath unites us. \nI’ve proven myself now. There’s still more to do, because the list is long. But tonight, I’m taking this time to write down my feelings, to have a small celebration. Tomorrow I’ll go back to serving justice. \nOne day, when the time is right, we’ll meet, and on that day, she will know she has the truest of friends. \nIt will be the happiest day of my life. \n1 \nOn a cold, crisp morning in the waning days of 2060, Lieutenant Eve Dallas stood in a sumptuous bedroom done in bold strokes of rich purple, deep metallic grays, and quick splashes of green. Outside the ad blimps manically touted the AFTER CHRISTMAS BLOW-OUT SALES! and street vendors hyped fake designer wrist units and knockoff handbags to throngs of tourists packed into the city for the holiday week. \nOutside life went on. Inside the plush bedroom with all its color and style, it had stopped. \nAn enormous arrangement of white lilies and purple roses in a tall, mirrored vase on the pedestal centered in the wide window couldn’t quite mask the smell of death. Instead the fragrance layered over it","cbCaiv0oO9coDGfa","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv0oO9coDGfa","pdf",1496785,310,"English","# Prologue\n## Epigraph\n## Prologue","[{\"question\":\"What is revealed in the prologue about the killer’s mindset?\",\"answer\":\"The prologue frames the killer as believing killing is both rewarding and purposeful justice, driven by devotion to someone admired and a sense of spiritual connection.\"},{\"question\":\"Where does Lieutenant Eve Dallas first encounter the case?\",\"answer\":\"Eve Dallas finds the body in a luxurious bedroom with elaborate décor, where the death appears staged amid holiday-week city activity.\"},{\"question\":\"What message is left near the victim, and why is it significant?\",\"answer\":\"A wall message addressed to “Lieutenant Eve Dallas” declares the victim’s life was a lie and that justice has been served, positioning Eve as directly involved or implicated.\"}]","Obsession in Death - Prologue | PDF",1789944060,477]
