The primary emphasis is upon using tests as adjuncts to counseling, i.e., diagnosis, evaluation, and therapy. The major emphasis of the course will be on the MMPI. \nCourse Prerequisites: None listed in BSU Course catalog. \nCourse Objectives: This is a graduate level course in objective personality appraisal, and I aim to introduce you to the fundamental principles and practice of objective personality assessment and report writing. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments have a long-standing history of innovation that has allowed these measures to be among the predominant broad-band personality assessment instruments used in applied practice (Ben-Porath, 2013) . As such, the major focus of this course will be on versions of the MMPI currently available for use in practice: the MMPI-2 (Butcher et al., 2001), the MMPI- \n2-Restrutured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2011; Tellegen & Ben-Porath, 2011), the MMPI- 3 (Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2020a; 2020b), the MMPI-Adolescent (MMPI-A; Butcher et al., 1992), and the MMPI-A-Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF; Archer et al., 2016). We will also briefly discuss other self-report personality instruments you may encounter in the field (e.g., Personality Assessment Inventory [PAI]). By completing this course, you will become familiar with the theoretical basis and interpretation of these instruments, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. You will develop an understanding of how information from these instruments can be used for diagnosis, intervention, and treatment planning in an ethical and diversity-sensitive manner. Finally, you will learn how we can best integrate findings from objective personality measures with other assessment data to provide a holistic picture of an individual. \nSpecific objectives for this course include: \n1. You will have a broad base of knowledge about several objective personality assessment instruments intended for use with adults and (to a lesser extent) adolescents. \n2. You will develop basic skills for administration, scoring, and interpretation for several objective personality measures. \n3. You will be able to apply basic principles of assessment and psychometric theory (e.g., reliability, validity, and clinical decision making) to objective personality tests. \n4. You will become informed consumers of personality assessment research and develop skills for critically evaluating the empi","cbCaiqSjczt3SYbM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqSjczt3SYbM","pdf",296083,11,"English","# Course Overview\n## Course Description and Emphasis on MMPI\n## Course Objectives and Skills Developed\n## Class Format and Weekly Workshop Structure","[{\"question\":\"What is the primary focus of CPSY 657?\",\"answer\":\"The course primarily emphasizes the MMPI family of objective personality assessment instruments and how they support counseling through diagnosis, evaluation, and therapy.\"},{\"question\":\"What will students learn to do by completing the course?\",\"answer\":\"Students will learn theoretical bases and interpretation of MMPI instruments, apply psychometric principles, evaluate personality assessment research, and integrate test findings into ethical, diversity-sensitive case conceptualizations and reports.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the class structured for learning and practice?\",\"answer\":\"The class meets once per week and for most topics includes a formal lecture, discussion of issues from assigned readings, and time to apply the concepts; the course is organized into mini “workshops” to support practice such as interpretation.\"}]","Objective Personality Appraisal - CPSY 657 - Spring 2026 | PDF",28]
