This is the gap this book sets out to bridge.  \nMost machine learning texts treat numerics as a side concern. They derive elegant update rules, prove convergence under idealized conditions, and leave the reader to discover, on their own, why those equations sometimes produce NaN values, why gradients explode the moment they touch real data, and why the same algorithm that converged in a paper diverges in production. This book is for the reader who has been on the receiving end of those surprises.  \nThe audience I have in mind is the upper-undergraduate or graduate student in machine learning, the working data scientist who wants to understand why their models behave the way they do, and the engineer building systems that have to keep working as scale increases by orders of magnitude. The mathematics here is rigorous where rigor matters, but the goal is always to connect theory to what actually happens when code runs. The book is organized in seven parts. Part I lays the foundations: floatingpoint arithmetic, error analysis, and the numerical view of linear algebra. Part II covers optimization in depth, from gradient descent through secondorder and constrained methods. Part III is dedicated to numerical linear algebra, the workhorse of every modern ML system. Part IV applies these tools to deep learning specifically. Part V addresses probabilistic and statistical computation.
