While not all Cal Bandsmen are Giants fans, everyone who attended the Giants’ Victory Parade regarded it as a day they’ll never forget. \nOn November 3rd, two days after winning the World Series in Texas, the Cal Band arrived in San Francisco for the traditional championship victory parade. Many Cal Bandsmen saw this asa once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a few were even excused from midterms to participate. From the moment we got off the bus, we could feel the magic in the air. Peoplesat on every rooftop, looked out from office building windows, and lined every street insight. It was a sea of orange, black, and panda hats. We got in line for the parade and soon realized that we had the honor of leading the Parade of Champions down the streets of San Francisco. \nAs we waited in line, we got to meet the Giants’ beloved announcers, Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper and Jon Miller, who all looked just as excited as we were to be there. Before the parade started, we played a short set for the people nearby. The fans were especially thrilled when we played two Giants’ anthems,“Don’t Stop Believing” and “Lights” by the San Francisco band Journey. \n(continued on page 3) \nPut on that Red Shirt! \nJonathan Nagata (baritone ‘07) leads the Cal Band through the streets of San Francisco celebrating the Giants’ World Series Championship \nSpring Showcase 2011 \nMatt “Harpo!” Bjork, bass ‘87, Band-uh! ‘90 \nWhile most Cal Band alums have had enough of the marching around, gak, hurry-up-and-wait, road trips, hot and sweaty uniforms, inter-band relationships, and SHB performances, there area significant minority of us that have found it just too hardto put down our instruments and properly grow up. The California Repercussions (“Reapers”) has been one such happy home for recovering band-geeks for almost 30 years–entertaining audiences and“reaping happiness”for everyone involved. The band was started by loyal Aggie upperclassmen Doug McHaney, John Wellington, and others in response toa Reno“Charity Bowl”gig request that the Aggie Band-uh! was unable to accept. When it was determined that Budweiser would be sponsoring the performance with generous libations, the gig and band’s success was secured! \nHaving been informed that there would be“repercussions”for forming a non-university-sanctioned band, the “instigators” fully committed themselves to the endeavor and chose white, black, and RED for the stylish baseball shirts, nylon short-shorts and golf-caps – the most“contrasting” colors to the UC blue and gold. In the mid 1980s, the first Cal Bandsman, Jeff Johnstone (trombone‘80, DM‘83), joined the Reapers. Soon after, many of Jeff’s Cal Band friends joined as well including Gary Bowen (bass drum ‘81), Dale McGowan (alto ‘81, StuD‘84), and Erik Rosenquist (alto 79, StuD ‘82), and the Reapers began a tradition of soliciting new membership that has kept the fluid 110-member roster filled with over 20 Cal Band alumni members (+ 1 current Cal bandsman) playing hard, and having fun silly times. Thankfully the shorts have lengthened, and the shirts and caps have been updated through the years – though still proudly displaying the Reaper RED. The California Repercussions deliver an SHB stand-and-play style of performance about once a month in Northern California, with about \n(continued on page 5) \nKatie Fleeman, piccolo ‘09 \nI will admit it: I was a theatre kid in high school. That really obnoxious kind that has a song from a Broadway musical for every situation and quotes Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead in normal conversation. But when I gotto Cal, I abandoned the stage for the stadium, dedicating my time to the Cal Band.
