medical men in the collection ofsamples for pathological investigation so that thematerial is received in such a way that the bestpossible results are obtained on examination. \nIt does not pretend to enter deeply into thesubject of pathology, nor is it suggested that themethods therein described are the only methodsby which good results are obtainable.Usuallyonly one method for each investigation is described, and that one has been chosen because it issimple, requires the least amount of apparatus, and at the same time furnishes that degree ofexactitude which is necessary for the examinationimpending.Apologies are needed perhaps for theapparently elementary character of many of thedetails entered into, but they have been carefullyselected because in the experience of the Depart-ment they are essential, and at the same timedetails that are apt to be omitted. \nThe investigations which may be considered toconstitute the routine general examination areindicated in the text.Among the more elaborateand less.well-known investigations only those areincluded which may now be considered to have \n6 \npassed the experimental stage, and which mayserve a useful purpose in the diagnosis of disease. \nIt is requested that a brief history of the caseand the nature of the investigations requiredshould accompany each specimen,in order that thepathologist may direct his attention along thoselines which are likely to prove most useful. \nDELIVERY OF SPECIMENS AT THE LABORATORY. \nAttention is drawn to the fact that in many casesthe material collected should be delivered to thelaboratory with the least possible delay and pre-ferably by hand.Especially is this the case with— \nUrine for bacteriological examination. \nindican.,diastase. \n99 \nBlood for examination of red and white cells. \nFæces for bacteriological examination. \nexamination for vegetative amobæ. \n99 \nCerebro-spinal fluid, especially for investigationfor meningococci.
