Stillpainting in a whole new way for me.Over the Life”(by Donald Kuspit),was a gratifyingyears,both in Los Angeles and more recently in success for me,both critically and artistically andConnecticut,where I had relocated,I had gone ffor the gallery as well.back and forth between representation andabstraction in both painting and sculpture.The theme of abstract shapes supportingI was always torn between the attraction andrepresentational forms via the apple eventuallychallenges of both directions.Five years ago,took on another challenge for me.The notionI attempted to integrate these seemingly oppositeseemed a perfect vehicle for sculpture in theurges.I decided on the endlessly used apple forround.Thus,I decided to use the paintings asmy subject,placing them against barn boards forspringboards for a series of bronze sculptures.my background.That was the bare beginningLooking at the sculptures in actual space gave meof an artistic voyage that has taken me to evenrenewed impetus for painting,but now it wouldmore challenging places this very moment.refer to sculpture,still using abstract shapesAs I forced my eyes to see relationships that Isupporting apples.I proceeded to do a series ofinvented rather than what was actually there,paintings that would in my next exhibit,I found myself having a new art making\"Apples of the Hesperides,\"in 2002,accompanyexperience.As I flattened and articulated thethe new group of sculptures and also set up ashapes that made up my objects,I also took colorkind of dialogue between issues of paintingout of realism totally and heightened hue andand sculpture:flatness vs.volume,illusionprimary relationships in such a way that thevs.actualitybackgrounds became abstractpaintingssupporting objects (apples)that referred toIn these paintings the color relationships becomerepresentational art.Having always been anmore challenging.Objects move forwardart history buff,I deliberately incorporatedand back into often very bold backgroundreferences to past movements and concerns suchcompositions suggesting sculpture.Sometimesas flatness,abstract expressionism,surrealismthe apples seem to spin out of
