Early identification is crucial for effective therapeutic intervention, and non-invasive techniques have emerged as promising tools to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes. The paper thoroughly examines the advantages, limitations, and prospects of various non-invasive approaches, including blood tests, non-blood-based tests, and diverse imaging modalities. It discusses the biomarkers found in blood for early-stage cancer detection, specifying the types of cancer associated with each biomarker. The non-blood-based tests focus on components in saliva, urine, and breath for cancer detection, alongside current studies and future perspectives on various cancers. Optical imaging methods covered in this review include fluorescence imaging in the near-infrared (NIR) region, bioluminescence imaging, and Raman spectroscopy for early-stage cancer detection. Thereview also highlights the pros and cons of ultrasound imaging in early-stage cancer detection. Additionally, the clinical implications of using AI for cancer detection, both present and future, are explored. This paper provides valuable insights for researchers and clinicians working in the field of non-invasive early-stage cancer detection. \nGraphical abstract \nExtended author information available on the last page of the article \nKeywords Early-stage cancer detection · Non-invasive · Blood-based tests · Non-blood based tests · Ultrasound Imaging \nIntroduction \nCancer is a worldwide disease, with 18 million new cases and 9.5 million cancer-related deaths reported each year. Cancer is a wide collection of diseases that includes over 100 distinct and distinct diseases [10] . Cancer comes in many forms, but they all include unregulated and aberrant cell development. Normal cells grow and divide in a controlled manner to deliver healthier cells and keep the body healthy (Fig. 1) . When they become old or injured, they may be replaced with fresh cells. Cancerous cells, unlike normal cells, continue to develop and produce more abnormal cells. They may also grow uncontrollably, forming amass of tissue (tumor) or invading other organs (metastases) [16]. Early diagnosis is a pivotal stage in the treatment of cancer. Treatment options for late-stage cancers are frequently ineffective (A. C. [38]) . The disparity in survival rates between early and late-stage cancer diagnoses underscores the critical importance of early detection. Surgical intervention or less aggressive medication regimens are considerably more effective when employed during the initial stages of cancer, yielding a 5-year survival rate of 91%, in stark contrast to the 26% survival rate associated with late-stage detection [88] . Therefore, the early detection of tumors is crucial for the successful treatment of cancer. \nConventional cancer diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history assessment, physical examination, and various diagnostic tests [87]. The most commonly used diagnostic modalities for cancer encompass a spectrum of imaging methodologies like computerized tomography (CT) scan, bone scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) scan, ultrasound, and X-ray [29]. Using strong magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses, MRI enables high-resolution cross-sectional imaging, which is especially useful for identifying soft tissue structures. It has broad applications in the assessment of neoplastic lesions in the musculoskeletal, breast, and cerebral domains [19].
