It always followed that we would be 'diagnosed' with malaria and an injection would be given to us. This would be followed by three or four more visits to the dispensary in the following days for an injection every day. Strangely, this diagnosis would come after the nurse there looked at your eyes, throat and felt your temperature. The trend had made us fear hospitals and people in long white coats.  \nOn that day, our younghest brother, Kalusha had suddenly become sick. Everybody including my mother concluded that he had malaria. This was because he had all the signs that made us get a malaria injection everytime we visited the nearby dispensary. He had high fever and was vomiting. The thought of the long needle piercing the tender thighs of young Kalusha made my mother not to take him to the dispensary.  \nWe all sisded with Mother. No one wanted our bubbly Kalusha to be subjected to the pain of an injection. But as hours went by, his condition got worse. We realised that he was vomiting a lot and had serious diarrhoea. His smiles and lovely cooing were gone. He just sat, staring into the open space. Mother looked at him and shed a tear.  \nAfter a few hours, we could not keep Kalusha in the house anymore. We had to rush him to the dispensary. In a short while, we were there. There was a newly posted nurse at the dispensary. On seeing Kalusha, she quickly picked him up and rushed to an inner room with him. After a short while, she called us in. Kalusha was sipping what looked like milky water.  \nWe were not prepared for what followed. The nurse was so mad at us. \"Why have you kept the child at home for so long when you could see he was unwell?\" she shouted. Our explanations did not move her. She finally said, \"There's no injection for Kalusha. He only needs to constantly take ORS, I mean, the Oral Rehydration Salt solution. \"After finding out whether I knew how to read and write, she gave me several sachets. She told me to read some writings on the sachet. It read:  \n1. Put the contents of the ORS packet in a clean container  \n2. Add a cupful of water.  \n3. Stir well,and feed it to the child from a clean cup. Do not use a bottle.  \nI looked up then she added, \"Do not add any other liquid like milk, tea or fruit juice. use water only. \" I nooded and after a few more instructions, we left the hospital.
