at her seaside residence inWrightsville Beach,North Carolina in thespring of 1999.Ms.Lurie gave me directions toher rented home,but the beach houses lookedthe same.I became lost and was late for ourmeeting.  \nWhen I explained my predicament to thenovelist,she said,“You're lost because you don'thave your navigator with you.\"I laughed.Still,her statement suggested that I was Galveo,thecaptain of Night Ship.I suppose that being anauthor is very much like being a captain of anexploration ship:one directs the plot throughnumercus ideas;occasionally one experiencesverbal doldrums and swift changes in currents.But am I Galveo?  \nI am Galveo,as the French novelist GustaveFlaubert was Madame Bovary.As the author of  \nNight Ship,AVoyage of Discovery,I share someaffinity with all my created characters.Iunderstand Galveo's tendency for romance,forthe dreamy way she looks at her circumstances.I share her love of poetry.I sympathize withSella's no-nonsense,up-from-the-bootstrapsambition.I imagine Mahajan's sense of beingdisplaced,her painful lot of being “the other”in a strange land.I imagine Nic's battle withfelt duty and obligation,her battle withconscience,and other people's demands on hertime.I admire Melody's kindness and herwisdom.I feel sorry for Trinket's loneliness,andthe way that objects become the center of heremotional life.  \nNight Ship,AVoyage of Discovery,is a shortnovel with a two-part structure.Six women,unknown to each other by day,join each otherin a common dream or mythos aboard a fifteenthcentury sailing ship.Each character narrates atwenty-first century story and also a fantasy storyon the boat.The sailing ship is meant torepresent the Lacanian concept of desire for themother and is further
