She creates colourful textile art referencing her ancestral lands of Darukaon Gomeroi Country. Using wool, Sophie carefully crafts wall hangings celebrating the natural beauty of grasses, creek beds, grains of sand and bush plants like wattle and eucalyptus flowers found on Country. Photo: Jacquie Manning.  \n2024  \nIllustrations by Sophie Honess  \nNGV TEENS 2024  \nTo start  \n1 Place two cardboard rings together and line up the two slits.  \n2 Holding the end of the wool against the cardboard, start wrapping it around the rings.  \n3 Continue wrapping the wool around the rings until the cardboard is completely covered. The more wool, the fuller the pompom.  \nTIP: To add more wool or change colour, take a new piece and continue wrapping. Make sure to wrap over the end of the first piece to secure it in place.  \nOnce you have finished wrapping  \n1 Cut an arm’s length of wool and keep to the side.  \n2 Gently push scissors between the two pieces of cardboard and cut the wool along the cardboard edge, ensuring you hold the cardboard rings firmly.  \n3 Take the length of wool, wrapping it between the centre of the cardboard rings twice, before securing with a tight knot.  \n4 Carefully remove the cardboard rings.  \n5 Trim the pompom so that it is nice and round.  \nAdd leaves  \n1 Thread an arm’s length of embroidery thread through the needle eye and tie the end into a knot.  \n2 Cut some felt into leaf shapes.  \n3 Arrange the leaves together and sew with the needle and thread.  \n4 Once the leaves are secured together, remove the needle from the thread.
