English place-names are used if they are common (e.g.,“Tokyo” rather than the Romanized Japanese “Tōkyō”) .  \nBasic Japanese pronunciation is relatively simple. There are five vowel sounds: a—father, i—eat, u—moon, e—bed, o—alone. A line over a vowel merely lengthens the time it is held (e.g., the ō in Jirō is held about twice as long as the o in Chieko) . The Japanese r has no English equivalent but is somewhere between d and r. It is similar to a Spanish r but without the trill.
