\nDJUN ABA RNES'SN E WYORK \n冠 \n5(8 \nDJUNA BARNES(1892-1982)was born in Cornwall-on-Hudson,an artists’colony north of New York. She was educatedby her parents:her American father was an artist, her Englishmother a writer. In the early 1900s Djuna Barnes went to NewYork, studying art at the Pratt Institute and the Arts StudentsLeague.By 1913 she was a regular columnist for The BrooklynDaily Eagle, illustrating her work with her own Beardsley-influenced drawings, also contributing to other newspapers.Herjournalism enabled her to support her mother and three youngerbrothers after her father's remarriage. In 1915 Djuna Barnespublished her first poems,The Book of Repulsive Women.Shemarried the editor Courtenay Lemon but this lasted for littlemore than two years. After their separation in 1919she travelledto Paris with letters of introduction to Ezra Pound and JamesJoyce. Here she continued to write, becoming a stylish figure ofParisian expatriate life,at the centre of the Modernist move-ment.She began a ten-year relationship with the silverpointartist Thelma Wood and when this ended in 1931 she was helpedby Peggy Guggenheim, who gave her money and somewhere tolive. She also stayed at Peggy Guggenheim's English home, writing Nightwood under her roof. Her friend, the writer EmilyHolmes Coleman, was largely responsible for bringing this novelto the attention of T.S.Eliot,who published it in 1936 with hisown introduction.Nightwood immediately became a cult novel,as did her last major work,The Antiphon,a dramatic poeminspired by her association with Eliot.Djuna Barnes alsopublished A Book(1923);a novel,Ryder(1928);a revised andenlarged edition of A Book-A Night Among the Horses(1929);Selected Works (1962)and a book of rhymes,Creatures in anAlphabet(1982).Virago also publish a collection of herpreviously uncollected tales,Smoke and Other Early Stories(1985),and a volume of previously uncollected interviews,I CouldNever Be Lonely Without a Husband. \nThis enigmatic literary figure, whose circle included RobertMcAlmon,Natalie Barney,Kay Boyle,Gertrude Stein andAntonia White, became a recluse in 1940.She moved into a smallapartment in Greenwich Village and from time to time herneighbour,e.e.cummings,would shout from his window“Areya still alive,Djuna?\"She died six days after her ninetiethbirthday. \nA collection of Djuna Barnes's letters is forthcoming from Virago. \n# NEW YORK\n\nDJUNA BARNES \nEdited with Commentary byAlyce Barry \nDrawings by Djuna Barnes \nForeword by Douglas Messerli \nVIRAG0
