Humphrey’s address “The Open Door,” delivered at the 26th Green Foundation Lecture in 1967. The speech contrasts the Iron Curtain era described by Churchill in 1946 with conditions in 1967, arguing that confronting facts should guide policy and action. It frames Western Europe’s economic recovery and the emergence of a new relationship with Europe as a period of “new engagement.”",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":10,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/new-engagement-the-open-door-vital-speeches-of-the-day/420944/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/new-engagement-the-open-door-vital-speeches-of-the-day/420944.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"RuangKosong","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-18","2026-09-28",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":19},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"Who delivered “The Open Door” in the “New Engagement” lecture?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"Hubert H. OPEN DOOR\n\nBy Hubert H.Humphrey,Vice President of tbe United StatesDelivered at the 26th Green Foundation Lecture,Westminster College,Fulton,Missouri,March 5,1967 \nPresident Davidson and Chairman of the Board ofTrustees,John Dalton,Vice President Stinson,my goodfriend,Governor Hearnes,my friend,Senator Long,Congressman Curtis, members of the faculty, membersof the community of Westminster College, students andneighbors. \nAnd I believe that this new period,if we do not lose ourwits or our nerve,or our patience, can see the replacementof the Iron Curtain by the Open Door. \nWhen Churchill spoke here on March 5,1946 there weremany in this country—and elsewhere—who would notaccept his stark characterization of the state of affairsin Europe. \nFirst,may I just make one casual observation.Notlong ago,I was visiting another one of our great colleges, and the President of that institution said to me as wewere going through the ceremonies of the presentationof Honorary Degrees,\"I want you to know that on thisfaculty we have(I think he said something like)sixty-sixearned degrees, earned doctorates, but I am very happyto present you with an Honorary Doctorate.\"I want Dr.Davidson to know that once you've been Vice Presidentof the United States, even for two years, you've earnedit, and I am most grateful, humbly grateful, and highlyhonored to be inclded amongst the Honorary Alumni ofthis great college. This college and this occasion is vestedwith tremendous tradition. \nBut Churchill was right. And he was right to speak out. \nThe beginning of wisdom, the foundation of sound policyand action,is to face the facts. \n## What were the facts in March of 1946?\n\nWestern Europe lay helpless and prostrate after terriblewar—literally dependent for her survival on the pro-tection and goodwill of the United States. The politicalinstitutions, the economies, the peoplesof WesternEurope stood helpless—save for the United States--inface of the imperialist impulses emanating from theEast. \nThere,Stalin had literally erected an Iron Curtain be-tween the nations and peoples of Eastern Europe and thoseof the West.On his side of that curtain he saw all as oc-cupied territory...the spoils of war.And his furtherintentions were declared and clear. \nExactly 21 years ago today,Winston Churchill spokethese well-remembered words: \n\"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic,an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent.”\"The continent,\"of course, was Europe. \n## What are the facts of March of 1967?\n\nWestern Europe stands today second only to the UnitedStates as a free and powerful center of economic and so-cial well-being.Because of their brave initiatives—andwith our help—the nations of Western Europe stand ableonce again to assert their own role in the world. \nWhen Churchill spoke here,a new phase in history hadbegun—that post-war conflict, centered in
