press that even now a year after the encyclical first appeared,the Pope's thesis is virtually ignored.  \nWhat Pope John believed is roughly what John Kennedy practiced:that the cause of peace and justice in a dangerous nuclear age is not servedby allowing the world to harden into two mutually antagonistic camps.Ifa nuclear holocaust is to be avoided,there must be a search for commonground.Given the current state of weaponry,pugnacity becomes a luxurywe cannot afford-and this is not a matter of fear,but of reason.The his-tory of violence in the West shows that when national
