He was called Béni. Béni was only thirteen years old. Béni had a dream in life . It did not matter what stood in his way. Béni never gave up.  \nOn one fateful day, as Béni was taking a walk alone in the forest, he fell into a pit. Alas! The pit was very, very deep. Luckily, Béni did not break any of his arms or legs . Béni never thought he would fall into a pit. But he did. Things like these can happen to anyone —even to very good people like Béni.  \nThe pit could not be seen easily. It lay hidden behind the bushes and trees of different kinds of wild fruits . On one side there was a huge, raised rock. There was also a fresh water stream close by. The sunlight too beamed through the trees into the veiled pit to give light.  \nBut no one in Little Village ever knew there was a pit there!  \nBéni called for help; but no one could hear him . For days, he called and called. Noone heard him . People searched for Béni everywhere . Not once did it occur to them to go beyond the bushes and trees in the direction of the pit. So, when the people could not find him in plain sight they gave up the search; and only hoped for a miracle .  \nBéni’s friends were very sad. All they had were memories of the good things Béni used to do. They said repeatedly,“Wherever Béni could be, may his good heart and strong will be an asset in his life .” His friends wished him well.  \nBéni was now totally cut off from everyone he knew. He had no other choice but to accept his new reality—as he thought hard about what to do . He ate wild fruits that fell from the trees . Once in a while, the water from the stream above would splash into the pit. With both hands, Béni scooped the water from the pit floor to drink. Béni had to find new ways to stay alive .  \nBéni’s strong will kept him going. He knew that one day he would get out of the pit. He just didn’t know when.
