It describes how apartheid enforced separation through laws, “pass book” identification, and unequal schools, hospitals, transport, and opportunities. Has anyone ever called you a troublemaker? I don’t think anyone likes being called that, but it turned out to be appropriate because Nelson did cause trouble for oppressors and also received trouble from them. \nRolihlahla Mandela was born in the small South African village of Mvezo on July 18, 1918. He was the 􀀪rst person in his family to attend school. On the 􀀪rst day at the mission school his teacher gave him the English name Nelson. He had no a choice about his new name, but he was thankful to be in school and learning new things. \nHe also loved listening to stories the elders told about his ancestors. The elders told about how life changed when the white people settled in the land. When they came to South Africa from Europe, the black people shared their land with the white people, but eventually, the white people took over the land. \nWhen Nelson was twelve, his father died. More and more laws were made to keep blacks and whites separate. This way of governing is known as apartheid. \nBlacks could live only in reserved areas.
