Many jobs in agriculture have been deemed too hazardous for children younger than 16 years. A waiver allowing 14-and 15-year-old youth to work on farms requires safety course certification. Nebraska Extension has partnered with a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health funded Agricultural Safety Center to provide an annual tractor and equipment safety course across Nebraska. To gauge impact, a survey addressed questions regarding the program’s long-term impact, perceived value, injuries, close calls, recommendations for improvement and adoption, and implementation of safety practices. The results have led to improved programming. The findings provide a roadmap to establish effective tractor and equipment certification programs. \nAmong all occupations, agriculture continues to be among the most hazardous, with work-related fatal injuries disproportionally affecting youth (Kearney, 2015) . The mostrecent surveillance data show that in 2014 an estimated 12,000 youth were injured on farms with 4,000 of these injuries due to farm work (CDC, 2016) . Youth farm workers are highly vulnerable to agricultural machinery hazards, frequent exposure to high farm noise, tractor rollover","cbCaiccJt4To143g","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiccJt4To143g","pdf",204889,"English","# Abstract\n## Agricultural hazards and youth vulnerability\n## Policy context for youth employment and exemptions\n## Program design and impact measurement\n## Results and improvement directions","[{\"question\":\"What requirement allows 14- and 15-year-old youth to work on farms?\",\"answer\":\"They can work under a waiver only after completing safety course certification.\"},{\"question\":\"How does Nebraska Extension measure the long-term impact of the safety course?\",\"answer\":\"A survey assesses long-term impact, perceived value, injuries and close calls, recommendations for improvement, adoption, and implementation of safety practices.\"},{\"question\":\"What conclusions does the article draw about future tractor and equipment certification programs?\",\"answer\":\"Results led to improved programming and provide a roadmap for establishing effective certification programs.\"}]","Nebraska Extension Tractor and Equipment Safety Certification Course—Measuring Long-Term Impact and Implementing Improvements | PDF",25]
