Mũthuri ũyũ etagwo Ndenderũ . Kamwana gake getagwo Ikara. Kaarĩ kamĩaka ta ikũmi na ĩtano.  \nA long time ago in the land of the Agĩkũyũ lived a man and his son.  \nThe man's name was Ndenderũ . His son's name was Ikara. He was about fifteen years old.  \nBũrũri ũria maikaraga nĩ kwarĩ na marimũ manyakondo. Marimũ maya nĩ mathumbũraga andũ mũno. Nĩ marĩte andũ hakuhĩ othe, na mahiũ mao makamanina.  \nIn the same land lived ogres. The ogres used to disturb people a lot. They had eaten up most of the people. They had eaten up all the people's livestock.  \nNĩundũ woguo Ndenderũ na Ikara maikaragangurunga-inĩ handũ harĩ na karũi na kamũtitũ .  \nMacaragia irio ciao rũci-inĩ tene marimũ matanokĩra.  \nFor this reason, Ndenderũ and Ikara used to live in a cave. It was near a brook and a glade. They would look for their food early in the morning. This was before the ogres woke up.  \nMũthenya ũmwe nĩ macereirwo gũũkĩra gũcaria irio. Nĩ marĩ ahũtu mũno. Magĩtereta kahinda karaya kana nĩ megũthiĩ gũetha irio.  \nOne day they were late in waking up to look for food. They were very hungry.  \nThey talked for long on whether to go look for food.  \nNgoro ciao nĩ ciarĩ na guoya mũno. Nĩ mamenyaga atĩ mathaa macio marĩ ma marimũ gũcanga bũrũri wothe. Thutha nĩ monire maga gũcaria irio nĩ mekũhoteka nĩ ngaragu.  \nTheir hearts were fearful. They knew that was the time the ogres would roam the land. They realised that if they did not look for food, they would suffer hunger.  \nNĩ moimagarire na makianjia gũetha irio. Marĩ namũnyaka mũno tondũ nĩmakorire handũ ndũma, ngwacĩ na ikwa ciatigarire.  \nThey left to look for food. They were lucky because they found a place with food.
