Background highlights how AI can improve clinical decision-making and operational efficiency while creating ethical risks around privacy, accountability, informed consent, and the maintenance of human-centered care. Methods apply PRISMA-guided systematic review methods selecting 13 studies from PubMed, Embase, IEEE Xplore, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, followed by thematic analysis of ethical themes. Results emphasize data privacy/security, accountability, transparency, and preserving human touch, with implications for education, stakeholder engagement, and governance.","Received: 14 August 2024 \nAccepted: 19 October 2024 \nDOI: 10.1111/inr.13059 \nSYSTEMATIC REVIEW \nNavigating ethical considerations in the use of artificial intelligence for patient care: A systematic review \nWalaa Badawy PhD􀀃 Haithm Zinhom PhD􀀄 Mostafa Shaban PhD􀀅 \n1Department of Psychology, College of Education, King Khaled University, Abha, Saudi Arabia \n2Mohammed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, Abu Dhabi, UAE \n3 Community Health Nursing Department, College of Nursing, Jouf University, Sakaka, Saudi Arabia \nCorrespondence \nMostafa Shaban, Community Health Nursing Department, College of Nursing, Jouf University, Sakaka, Saudi Arabia. \n[Email: mskandil@ju.edu.sa](Email: mskandil@ju.edu.sa) \nFunding information \nDeanship of Research and Graduate Studies at King Khalid University, Grant/Award Number: \nRGP2/193/45 \nAbstract \nAim: To explore the ethical considerations and challenges faced by nursing professionalsin integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into patient care. \nBackground: AI’s integration into nursing practice enhances clinical decision-making and operational efficiency but raises ethical concerns regarding privacy, accountability, informed consent, and the preservation of human-centered care. \nMethods: A systematic review was conducted, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Thirteen studies were selected from databases including PubMed, Embase, IEEE Xplore, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. Thematic analysis identified key ethical themes related to AI usein nursing. Results: The review highlighted critical ethical challenges, such as data privacy and security, accountability for AI-driven decisions, transparency in AI decision-making, and maintaining the human touch in care. The findings underscore the importance of stakeholder engagement, continuous education for nurses, and robust governance frameworks to guide ethical AI implementation in nursing. \nDiscussion: The results align with existing literature on AI’s ethical complexities in healthcare. Addressing these challenges requires strengthening nursing competencies in AI, advocating for patient-centered AI design, and ensuring that AI integration upholds ethical standards. \nConclusion: Although AI offers significant benefits for nursing practice, it also introduces ethical challenges that must be carefully managed. Enhancing nursing education, promoting stakeholder engagement, and developing comprehensive policies are essential for ethically integrating AI into nursing. \nImplications for nursing: AI can improve clinical decision-making and efficiency, but nurses must actively preserve humanistic care aspects through ongoing education and involvement in AI governance. \nImplications for Health Policy: Establish ethical frameworks and data protection policies tailored to AI in nursing. Support continuous professional development and allocate resources for the ethical integration of AI in healthcare. \nKEYWORDS \nAcademic subject, communication, ethics, nurse–patient communication, patient participation, research, systematic reviews \nINTRODUCTION \nThe genesis of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare marks a significant milestone in the evolution of medical practice, driven by the urgent need to manage the exponentially growing volume of health-related data and the increasing complexity of healthcare delivery (Bohr & Memarzadeh, \n2020) . The early foray of AI into healthcare was modest, primarily aimed at streamlining administrative processes such as patient scheduling, billing, and record-keeping (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019) . These initial steps laid the groundwork for more ambitious applications, signaling a shift toward leveraging AI to directly enhance patient care and clinical outcomes (Mikalef & Gupta, 2021) . \nInt
