This course builds foundational knowledge and analytical tools for evaluating urban landscapes through resilience and ecosystem services frameworks, highlighting how nature-based solutions such as forests, parks, trees, and green roofs can mitigate urban challenges. Students apply the concepts via a group project, articulating nature-based solution potential and presenting an urban ecosystem services assessment using a selected case study.","| Expected Implementation in Academic Year (New format) | AY2026-2027 |\n| --- | --- |\n| Semester/Trimester/Others (specify approx. To understand the role that cities can play in mitigating these issues, this course aims to equip students with the basic knowledge and tools to analyze urban landscapes using the frameworks of resilience and ecosystem services. We will \ncover the major challenges that cities face in the 21st century and the role that nature-based solutions –promoting forests, parks, trees, green roofs– can play in addressing these challenges. \nThrough a group project, students will apply this knowledge in practice by articulating the potential for nature-based solutions and presenting an urban ecosystem services assessment for a case study of their choice. \nUpon the successful completion of this course, you (student) would be able to: \n\n| ILO 1 | Describe the major challenges and opportunities faced by cities in the Anthropocene |\n| --- | --- |\n| ILO 2 | Explain how nature-based solutions can address urban challenges using the analytical frameworks of resilience and ecosystem services |\n| ILO 3 | Apply modelling tools to assess ecosystem services provided by nature-based solutions in cities |\n| ILO 4 | Collaborate with other students to produce and present an assessment of urban ecosystem services in a case study |\n\nThe course comprises two parts: i) a series of lectures aiming to provide the basic theoreƟcal knowledge on urban challengesand nature-based soluƟons –what they are and how they benefit people; ii) pracƟcal acƟviƟes aiming to consolidate this knowledge through discussions, hands-on modeling experience, and a site visit (see weekly schedule for details) . \n-Nature-based soluƟons for ciƟes (2023) Edward Elgar Publishing.
