Farmermanaged natural regeneration is a simple, low-cost way to remedy those problems. It does this by encouraging the regrowth of trees from live stumps and from seeds already in the ground.  \nFarmers in many different parts of the world are re-discovering skills that have traditionally been used to keep the land in good heart with the help of trees. They are also finding that their soil fertility and therefore their crop yields improve as a result.  \nAttempts to plant new trees from scratch have often failed because of extreme heat, limited water, freely grazing livestock and sometimes lack of commitment. But regeneration methods encourage farmers to make use of the natural resources that are freely available. They can do this by nurturing the growth of self-sown tree seedlings, and by encouraging the re-growth of living tree stumps on their land.  \nFreeing the Underground Forest  \nFarmer-managed natural regeneration relies on re-growth from live stumps and roots, and the growth of tree seeds and seedlings already present in the soil: the underground forest.  \nThe living stumps of previously felled trees have mature roots that are able to reach nutrients and water deep in the ground. These roots also release stored energy as new shoots grow. This means that re-growth is usually faster, and more successful, than the growth of newly planted trees would be.  \nInstead of cutting down or burning tree re-growth in fields before planting their crops, many farmers now understand that it is a good idea to protect this re-growth and manage it to best effect for themselves and their community.
