Farmers and gardeners often expend much time and effort removing weeds from their crops as they grow. Of course, all plants fulfil some purpose of their own in the natural world, whether as sources of nectar for insects that will go on to pollinate other wild plants as well as crops, or as fodder for a host of wild animals. But farmers, too, are beginning to recognise that so-called weeds can be helpful to them in a number of different ways.  \nHelpful weeds at work  \nAcross east Africa, thousands of farmers are planting weeds in their maize fields. Though this sounds odd, the technique increases yields, by giving the insect pests something else to eat instead of maize.“It’s better than pesticides, and a lot cheaper,” says Mr Ziadin Khan.“It has raised farm yields here near Mbita, Kenya by 60–70% .”  \nNapier grass  \nIn east Africa, maize faces two major pests. The first is an insect called the stem borer. Most years, stem borer larvae eat their way through up to a third of the region’s maize.
