THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BULLETINNOVEMBER,1926 \n。公41.31.c① \nNATIONALITY IN AMERICA* \nALBERT PERRY BRIGHAM \nIt was my fortune to grow up in the Genesee Valley.I supposethe reason why I did not yield to the lure of Rochester was this, thatmy forbears on their way westward had paused for a generationamong the Chenango hills. Thus from ancestral infuence, from yearsin the ministry, and decades of teaching,I have watched the growth, observed the strong men,and seen the world-wide influence of theRochester and Colgate schools.I have not, therefore, been unneigh-borly in heart, though this,if I must confess it,is my first visit inthis house of learning. \nYou were a child of ours, though there was a considerable domesticdisturbance when you left us;but that is long past and I bring yousincerest greeting and good wishes upon this day of memory. \nYou must let me have a parable from my own field.Streams fromancient uplands, with din and swirl,in rival and rocky courses, flowout on broad and peaceful plains and mingle in a lordly river, whosegoal is the great waters. In some fashion like this, two schools of theprophets, down three-quarters of a century, out of hostility and tur-moil,pass into fellowship, into power that is noiseless because it iscosmic, toward the ocean of abundant life. \nI am to say some things about nationality in AmericaThis choiceof a theme is a symptom of a great change in the American lookingat himself.Loud assumption and cocksureness about ourselves havegone and a vogue of self inquiry has come in their place. This try-ing to understand and describe ourselves ranges all the way from thecaricatures of the novelists, the diagnosis of innumerable magazinewriters, and the jazz of H.L.Mencken,to serious and heart-searchinginvestigation.We shall keep reasonably near the last in this address. \nTo be decently clear in our thought, let us give a moment to termsWe will instance the word\"race,\"that we may then for tonight layit on the shelf and be not disturbed by it.The word \"race\"ought tobe used only of deep and age-long differences in human groups,di-versities so rooted for millenniums that the memory and records of \nmen run not to the contrary. There are black, white, yellow, redraces. Here all agree.Among the white,we follow the anthropolo-gists.There are Mediterranean,Alpine, and Teutonic or Nordicgroups.Beyond such major distinctions we come into confusion. There is no English race,if we use the word with any precision.Thereare no Latin races. The French are a mixture, the Italians are com-posite,and the Spanish are compounded of many strains. There areLatin nationalities, plenty of them, going largely on the basis of lan-guageA distinguished writer says we have an American race.Wecannot follow him.We have an American variety, but to call us arace brings confusion of thought. \nSo I pass,in the dogmatism that haunts brief exposition,to na-tionality.Do we now come to something clear and definable?Byno means.Big things are all indefinable. No complete definition ofnationality exists,or can be made.We can hint,go around, and comenear. That is all.Fiords, fish, precipices, wild shores, blond faces, viking ships,—what mean these?Speak the nane of Bjornsen—it islike running up the national ","cbCaijznbl7ORCtV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijznbl7ORCtV","pdf",553604,13,"English","# NATIONALITY IN AMERICA\n## Title and author\n##
