However, the situation has gradually changed over recent decades thanks to a process of academic legitimization and, most importantly, numerous works that challenge the idea of their belonging to a lowbrow medium. Art Spiegelman’s Maus, for instance, challenges readers to confront the horrors of the Holocaust, and the graphic biography Erdoğan, by journalist Can Dündar and illustrator Anwar, examines the life and deeds of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In the Sinophone world, particularly in Taiwan, graphic novels also address serious themes, such as history and social issues, including LGBTQ rights, collective memory, and national identity. This article focuses on Wind Chaser Under the Blue Sky by Taiwanese author Jason Chien as a case study to illustrate how a graphic novel can incorporate multiple issues from the country’s recent past, especially those related to the immediate postwar period marked by the withdrawal of Japanese colonizers and the arrival of Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist forces. To do this, I will first analyse the historical context on which the work is based, then contextualize the environment in which it was produced, and finally, through a close reading of the graphic novel itself, demonstrate how the author addresses significant events such as the 1945 Raid on Taipei, the repatriation of Japanese nationals after World War II, and the reconstruction of Taiwan’s rail infrastructure. \nPalabras clave: historia de Taiwán; cómic taiwanés; colonización japonesa; repatria","cbCaikSKSiOUYTs4","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikSKSiOUYTs4","pdf",901216,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Introduction","[{\"question\":\"Why were comics historically considered less serious, and what changed in recent decades?\",\"answer\":\"Comics were often dismissed under the assumption that their main purpose was entertainment.
