Myth,Mind and the Screen\n\nUnderstanding the heroes of our times \nJohn Izod \nStirling Media Research InstituteUniversity of Stirling \nCAMBRIDGEUNIVERSITY PRESS \nIt is not hard to see that the techniques of Jungian textual analysis can beused to interpret the cultural meaning of those music stars who stir thepopular imagination.Rock and pop stars have comparable standing aspopular icons to their equivalents in film and television. In so far as theproduction of star personalities is concerned, this occurs because the pub-licity machines and marketing apparatus behind all the leisure industriesconstruct and promote their stars to audiences through broadly simi-lar mechanisms. What is more, the industry prefers crossovers, with starsworking in more than one medium,as a means of broadening the market. So pop stars produce not only CDs,audio tapes and vinyl, but also videotapes for TV broadcast.Web sites are set up in their names;corporateconcerns market tie-ins with their images, such as T-shirts advertisingconcert performances,or personal endorsements of products(Madonnaadvertising Max Factor make-up in glossy magazines in 1999).And thisis to say nothing of their appearances in movies. \nStar personalities in every medium possess a form of capital, namelytheir own image. The right to make use of that image is the saleable com-modity that, guided by agents, managers and publicists, they control andexploit. In semiotic terms, what they sell is a sign.As their cross-mediaactivities imply, stars function as signs,no matter in which medium theyflourish, that have been more or less deliberately constructed to carrycertain meanings. One of their distinguishing traits is that as signs theyoperate in more registers than the images of other musicians and ac-tors.An actor is a sign whose principal denotative function is to de-lineate a character in a drama.Movie stars have this function too, butsimultaneously they also signify themselves. The audience does not for-get the player behind the role as they may do with the actor.Further-more,the roles of movie stars extend beyond the characters they play inthe cinema and encompass their lives off screen(see Dyer 1998:20).Ithardly needs saying that much of the information available to fans(in sofar as it comes from sources within the control of the star's publicitymachine-press conferences and releases, personal appearances, fan \nmagazines,gossip columns;television and radio interviews)is no lessa construction than the on-screen character parts.Like screen actors, pop stars have dual roles, although it may be less obvious in their casebecause the gapbetween their performances and lives is usually narrowerthan in drama. \nTaking up the perspective of those who consume the star image,it isclear that fans have a strong desire to discover as much as possible aboutnot only their professional roles but also their private lives.Typically, the more fans find out about the object of their desire, the more theywant to know.Like movie stars, pop stars connote some significancemore subtle than they denote.Often what the star in any medium con-notes is semi-consciously apprehended rather than fully comprehendedby fans. The latter may well find it difficult to put a star's meaning orvalue into analytical words. In part this is usually because those qualitiesare communicated to them as much by actions, looks(physical appear-ance,costume,hair-style,make-up,gesture)or sound (the timbre of thevoice, characteristic intonation patterns or speech rhythms)as by what issaid. But where fans find they cannot analyse exactly what their heroesmean, their very inscrutability adds to the sense of charisma and magicsurrounding the personalities of stars.Publicity agents work hard to cre-ate such an aura around the figures they offer to the public as stars forthe simple reason that fans require to experience this sense of somethingmagical about their heroes if they are to recognise them as stars. It followsin Jungian terms that while a star's image is
