MUSIC FOR
CHAMELEONS
by Truman Capote
Random House,$10.95
Reviewed by LAURENCE SMITH,
former assistant editor of The Critic. | I’m a drug addict.I'm homosexual.
I’m a genius,"he writes.He is also an
acknowledged master of many literary
forms,including short story,novel,
drama,film scripts and narrative re-
porting. His In Cold Blood can even
claim generic responsibility for a new
literary form,the“non-fiction novel.”
A stalled work in progress,Answered
Prayers, may yet turn gossip into an art
form.
After examining all of his published
works,however,Capote concludes
that the iimitations of form are respon-
sible for his crisis.Never mind the
distractions of his incredibly worldly,
jet-set life, form is the culprit to blame
for never having“completely exploded
all the energy and esthetic excitements
that material contained."
Anything to cure a case of writer's
block,one supposes,but Capote's pro-
nouncements seem particularly naive
for someone so obviously gifted.Nev-
ertheless,he resolves to create with
these new writings a new form which
will combine all he knows about every
other form of writing because"a
writer ought to have all his colors, all
his abilities available on the same
palette for mingling."
Yet the mingling of colors consists of
little beyond a switch to first person
narrative,with dialogue often pre-
sented in screen play form.Moreover,
Capote no longer stays outside of his
material, which was his brilliant stroke | with In Cold Blood, but now sets him-
self center stage, not only reporter but
participant in the action. We find him
with his cleaning lady,as together they
make her rounds of fashionable New
York apartments.He spends an after-
noon sipping champagne with Marilyn
Monroe in a deserted Chinese res-
taurant.In Connecticut he encounters
an old lady who reads Jane Austen and
keeps a freezer full of dead cats.In a
Los Angeles airport he eludes arrest
with the help of Pearl Bailey. In the
book's longest selection,"Handcarved
Coffins:A Nonfiction Account of an
American Crime,"he participates in a
murder investigation.
That these new writings often suc-
ceed,producing beautifully rendered
portraits, owes less to any mingling of
colors on a palette than to Capote's un-
canny ear,which could have belonged,
as Tom Stoppard would say,to a Van
Gogh.Capote remains a listening
voyeur,brilliantly overhearing,syn-
thesizing and capturing in the spoken
word glimpses into the soul.With
lyrical,carefully controlled brush
strokes of dialogue,he reveals the
special inner qualities of the characters
he sketches.The layering of these
writings makes it often impossible to
be sure whether Capote is dealing in
fact or fiction, but the blurring of real
and imaginary in no way diminishes
the final effect.
In the book's title piece,Capote
visits a lady in Martinique who can |
| --- | --- | --- |
| MID-LIFE is the season of self-flag-
gelation.Under its daffy full moon,
some of us punish our bodies for the
deceit of growing old by donning
sneakers and jogging into the sun-
drenched countryside.Others take up
ice fishing. For the artist the insanity
is less animated but more acute, for its
creeps into the creative timbers.
Music for Chameleons,a collection
of new stories,reporting and conversa-
tional portraits by Truman Capote,is
the work of a gifted author trying to
shore up after a creative crisis. In an
embarrassing preface,Capote makes
matters worse by admitting it.The
crisis,he says,"altered my entire com-
prehension of writing,my attitude
toward art and life a","cbCaiokjrFmT20gO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiokjrFmT20gO","pdf",3326923,"English","# Music for Chameleons - Form and Creative Crisis
## Capote’s New
