The text explains the stage direction of the car within a cloud on a snowy mountain and quotes descriptive lines about the chariot and its drivers. It outlines the musical progression—from a soft, mysterious Adagio through crescendos, new themes, a ff climax, and concluding sustained chords—framing the piece as incidental music that evokes Shelley’s pantheistic rapture.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/music-for-a-scene-from-shelley-samuel-barber/431077/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/music-for-a-scene-from-shelley-samuel-barber/431077.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Bintang","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-09-29",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",12,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"Which Shelley'sPrometbeus Unbound. The lines in Act II,Scene 5,where Shelley indicatesmusic, suggested this composition. It is really incidental music for thisparticular scene, and has nothing at all to do with the figure of Prometheus.\" \nScene 5,Act II,of Shelley's poetic drama,Prometheus Unbound, has thisstage direction:The Car Pauses within a Cloud on the Top of a snowy Mountain.ASIA,PANTHEA,and the SPIRIT OF THE HoUR. \nThe car and its driver are thus described by Panthea near the end ofthe previous scene: \nSee,near the verge, another chariot stays; An ivory shell inlaid with crimson fire, \nWhich comes and goes within its sculptured rimOf delicate strange tracery;the young spiritThat guides it has the dove-like eyes of hope; How its soft smiles attract the soul!as lightLures winged insects through the lampless air. \nThen,after two intervening stanzas, follows the scene between The Spiritof the Hour,Asia, and Panthea,in which occur the lines quoted by Mr.Barberon the second page following. \nMr.Barber's music begins softly and mysteriously in the orchestra(Adagio,ma non troppo,9-8)with murmurings of the muted violas and violins, based upon a characteristically rhythmed figure which is an 1mportantelement in the development. The horn quartet, muted, play a phrase indescending harmonies which is also important in the structure of the piece. The instrumentation becomes fuller. There is a crescendo, and a new themeis heard, fortiscimo, from the unison and octave strings. The music attains \na ff climax,a great burst of orchestral sound. The mysterious descendingharmonies of the beginning are heard from the muted strings and harp, andthe music dies away with long sustained chords in the muted horns. \n* * * \nI am sure that Mr.Barber would be the last to claim that he has givenus the music of which Shelley dreamed—those \n“...sounds i'the air which speak the loveOf all articulate beings.\" \nBut he could say,at least, that he has written music which seeks toconvey to us something of Shelley's pantheistic rapture, his sense of the ideallove of all created spirits in a world too radiant for human eyes, and tooglorious, probably, for human ears;but a world of which,in our moreexalted moments,we are privileged to dream:that world of the future, withits reign of universal love, which did not seem impossible to Shelley's vision-ary spirit:when,as he wrote in a prophetic and exalted passage,\"menwill be gentle, wise, and just, joyous and free.\"LAWRENCE GILMAN.","cbCaisT46cWKaDTv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisT46cWKaDTv","pdf",2587417,36,"English","# Preface\n##
