Andrew was the lead vocalist, and he played the guitar sometimes. Wilson and Charlie both played guitar, Jason played base, Harrison  \n3  \nOne day, Andrew arrived at their practice very excited and waving a letter.  \n“Wow!” he shouted to his friends.“We have been invited to play at a competition concert in Sydney! They will pay for all our air fares and accommodation, and they provide top quality instruments so we don’t have to carry them. And then if we win something, we get to keep the instruments! Can you believe it?  \n4  \nElisabeth said,“Hey! We will have to get passports and visas, won’t we? Let’s get our photos tomorrow so we can start organising them.”  \nThey agreed to meet at Charlie and Natalie’s house the next morning, and begin their preparations for the trip. They were so excited that they didn’t do any practice that day, but hurried home to tell their families and friends!  \n5  \nBut then disaster struck!  \nOne week before they were due to leave for their trip, Elisabeth suddenly became very sick and was taken to the hospital. Andrew had noticed that she had been losing weight recently, and she was frequently sick with diarrhoea or a cough. It was a problem for the band, because she was the second vocalist and very important to the group.  \nThe whole band went to the hospital to visit her, and they were desperately hoping that she would be healthy again by the time they were to leave for Sydney. But they were terribly disappointed.  \nElisabeth looked as though she was asleep, but she had an IV in her arm and she was very pale. She had an oxygen mask over her face, and they could  \n6  \nhear that her breathing was  \n7  \nThe doctor took Andrew’s arm and led him to a room nearby. His face was serious as he answered the question.“No, I’m sorry, but she will not be well enough to travel with you. She has very severe pneumonia and will probably die tonight. Her family has been called, and they should be arriving here soon. I’m sorry.”  \nAndrew couldn’t believe what he was hearing!  \nElisabeth was dying? She wouldn’tbe going to Sydney with them?  \n8  \nAs they were discussing what they would need to do, Elisabeth’s family arrived.  \nNatalie spoke to them. “I am so sorry about Elisabeth! I don’t understand what happened to her! A few days ago, she was practising with us, getting ready to go to Sydney for a competition, and now she is so very sick! What happened to her?”  \nElisabeth’s sister sat down with them and explained,“Didn’t you  \nNatalie was stunned, and so were the other band members. HIV? But it did explain why Elisabeth had been sick so often with malaria, then a bad cough, diarrhoea, malaria again, diarrhoea again, and so on.
