OVERVIEW \nAdvanced Placement Music Theory is a full-year course designed to give high school musicians an opportunity to dramatically expand their musical understanding. It is assumed that students have acquired basic performance skills in voice or an instrument, as well as the ability to read and write music notation previous to enrolling in the class. Skills taught during this course range from visual analysis and aural analysis to reading and writing musical notation. The amount of material covered is substantial and the course moves quickly. The goal of this course is to train competent musicians who have the capacity to utilize their analytic abilities to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of music. This will be accomplished through various means, including ear training, the use of solfege syllables, as well as score study and analysis. Students will also apply their knowledge as they analyze, listen to, read, and compose music. \nThis course emphasizes correct notational skills, speed, and fluency with verbalizing basic concepts, including form, instrumental color (timbre), rhythm, melody, texture, and harmony. Then students progress to more creative tasks, building on this foundation. These tasks include creating a counterpoint toa given melody, harmonizing a melody with chords in four voices, and creating an original composition. Students will practice these skills through varied assignments both in class and for homework, as well as in assessments. The topics of harmony and voice leading will be continuously applied throughout this course and reinforced through varied part writing activities, including first-species counterpoint, realizing a bass line off of a given melody, and realizing in four parts both a figured bass and a Roman numeral progression, including Roman and Arabic numeral analysis. Students will study and learn to write exercises in soprano-bass counterpoint with appropriately implied harmony. \nII. RATIONALE \nAdvanced Placement Music Theory is an advanced level course designed to engage students in learning activities that will help them to achieve the outcomes assessed by the College Board’s Advanced Placement Music Theory Examination. This course is designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. These abilities will be developed through various listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises. Although this course focuses on music of the Common Practice Period (1600 – 1900), materials and processes found in other styles and genres are also studied. Students are encouraged to sit for the College Board’s Advanced Placement Music Theory Examination. Students who successfully complete the AP Music Theory Examination and plan to major in music in college may be able to enroll in an advanced music theory course, depending upon the individual college’s policy. This course of study has been revised to reflect the integration of the NJSLS for Visual and Performing Arts. In addition, computer technology, and interdisciplinary skills are integrated. \nIII.
