Their younger daughter, Louisa, was habitually the last to arrive. The morning paper was laid out for the head of the household to read during the meal, and the noise of snapping open the pages alerted the maid, Simona, who was in the kitchen, that the family was ready to be served.  \n“Good morning, sir, missus,” she said bringing in a platter of French toast, one of the family’s favorites since Cook always used the highest quality white bread. She set the plate down for them to serve themselves while she retrieved a pot of coffee from the kitchen.  \nMr. Burnside grumbled as he read.  \n“I don’t know why you subject yourself to the news first thing in the morning,” his wife said.“It always makes you cross.”  \n“If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Europe is starting up all the old grudges. As if the Great War wasn’t enough to sober mankind into eternal peace! Here we go again.”  \n“It’s not that bad Daddy, is it?” Amanda asked.  \n“The markets are going to be volatile. Germany has been doing so badly they are itching for a fight. I just hope they don’t mean all that saber rattling literally.”  \n“Put the paper down, dear, and enjoy your meal.”  \n“Yes, good idea. I haven’t even got to the national news to see what’s going on in Washington, much less the latest here in Boston.”  \nAmanda had taken the pages dealing with local issues and, after a few paragraphs, said,“I don’t understand why they bother to write about a rise in crime and blame it on gangs without saying where their information came from. Why are they so vague?”  \n“Good point. Maybe nobody wants to admit being the source. Surely not the Mayor’s office, even if they track such a thing. The last thing he wants is to be blamed for crime or the causes of it. Using the term‘gangs’ makes it seem as if there are shadowy, mysterious groups who are responsible for bad things happening. Perhaps gangs are responsible. In that case, no reporter in his right mind would identify who those organized groups are. That would be the end of him.”  \n“Oh, Edward, let’s talk about something more pleasant,” Mrs. Burnside said.  \n“Morning, all,” Louisa said, breezing into the room.“French toast! My favorite.”  \n“What are you up to today?” her mother asked. Since Louisa worked as a designer at an upscale women’s clothing salon, she always had a tidbit of gossip or a name to drop that intrigued her mother.  \n“Some new women appeared the other day and I hate to say it, but  \nthey seemed out of their element.”“In what way?”  \n“This is going to sound horribly snobbish, but they were dressed badly.”  \n“I should think that is your ideal customer. At least they knew to go there and you’re just the young woman to steer them in the right direction,” her father said.  \n“It was odd that, as we were discussing the type of dresses she would be interested in ordering, the younger woman searched in her  \nhandbag muttering about having the money with her. Anyone  \nwould know that we send an invoice after the work is done.”“I’m sure you will school them properly,” her mother said.  \n“And all of a sudden, she pulls out what can only be described as a giant wad of bills held together with a rubber band!
