SCIENCE is closer than ever to finding theIVI cause of multiple sclerosis. But the exact nature of thiscrippling neurological disorder remains a mystery and no cureor totally reliable treatment method has been developed.Al-though there are several general patterns, each case is uniqueand most patients have unpredictable periods of relapses andremissions.\"In the majority of cases there are attacks, full orpartial recovery and after an uncertain interval, another attack, full or partial recovery and so on,\"said Dr.Richard T.Johnson, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic at Johns HopkinsUniversity in Baltimore.\"There's a tremendous uncertaintyfactor in the disease....It really makes it very hard to planwhat your future's going to be.” \nIt is estimated that 250,000 Americans have MS(see p.577),but the disease's impact far outweighs the relatively small num-ber of victims. The main reason is that it primarily strikesyoung adults—the median age at onset is 29.²\"Even thoughit's a small number of people,it's a very important group ofpeople,\"said Dr.Dale McFarlin, chief of the neuro-immunologybranch of the National Institute of Neurological and Commu-nicative Disorders and Stroke(NINCDS).\"Usually they arepeople who have selected an occupation, have made decisionsabout marriage and frequently have children. Then they get hitby this disease and they just get wiped out.” \nMost of the patients live to old age and this puts a largefinancial burden on them and their families.NINCDS estimatesthat MS accounts for about $1.7 billion a year in medicalexpenses,Social Security,Medicare and Medicaid payments, and lost income and productivity.“Economically,MS is a verymuch greater drain than you might expect...because of thelong life expectancy, the age of onset and the fact that these areusually people with families,”Dr.Johnson said.“MS..occursat a very, very tragic time in people's lives.” \nThe emotional and psychological burdens can be even greaterthan he financial ones.\"The disease is a great wrecker of \nEditorial Research Reports \nAug5,1983 \nfamilies,\"said Dr.Byron Waksman, director of research pro-grams for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.\"This is notonly because those who get moderate-to-severe disease maybecome relatively helpless and thus the spouse and the childrenfind themselves stuck with all kinds of jobs they wouldn'tnormally have to do,but because MS interferes with sexualfunction, with bowel and bladder function....It can be a ter-ribly destructive disease to the person who has it and to every-body connected to him.” \n# Unique Characteristics Hinder Diagnosis\n\nMultiple sclerosis is—among the general public,at
