The MRI scanner is a large, hollow tube open at both ends that uses a large magnet, radio waves and computers to produce 2D and 3D images of the inside of your body. \nThe examination will involve several individual scans that are each usually a few minutes long. The radiographer will advise you of each length of scan before it starts. MRI does not use radiation like x-rays however, it is extremely important that strict safety checks are followed. \nWith your appointment letter you will also receive a safety questionnaire. It is very important that you fill this in before your appointment. \nWhy do I need this procedure? \nYour doctor has referred you for an MRI scan to help make a diagnosis or to guide further treatment plans. \nWhere do I go for my MRI Scan? \nPlease read your appointment letter carefully to ensure you attend the correct MRI scanner. This will either be at: \n- West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds \n- Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), Newmarket \nIs MRI Safe? \n- MRI scans are very safe and there are no known risks or side effects. \n- The scanner is very noisy as it makes loud, knocking noises – this is normal. \n- You will be provided with earplugs and headphones to protect your hearing \nMRI uses strong magnetic fields, so precautions are necessary for people with certain metal implants in their body. \nThe radiographers will need to carry out investigations on any active implants you may have to ensure you can undergo MRI. Some implants may not be safe for MRI. \nIf you have any of the following active implants, please contact us before your appointment: \n- Pacemakers and any cardiac (heart) device. i.e. , Loop recorder or internal cardiac device. \n- Cochlear (inner ear) implant \n- Aneurysm clips \n- Neuro stimulators \n- Programmable shunt \nSome devices can be affected by the MRI scanner and may increase the risk of skin burns. These will need to be removed before the scan. This includes: \n- Glucose monitoring devices \n- Pain patches \n- Hormone patches \n- Nicotine patches \n- Smart Technology \nHave you ever had any incident where metal may have gone into your eyes? \nIt does not matter how long ago this happened; you must let us know before your appointment. You may need to have an x-ray of your eyes to check that no metal is still in your eyes. If this is not checked it will not be safe for us to scan you. \nTattoos and make up. \n- Do not wear mascara or any lotions such as heat rubs as they contain metal particles. \n- Remove “cat eye nails” as the magnetic gel polish can heat up causing skin irritation and burns. \n- Some tattoos also contain metal that can occasionally heat-up during a scan. Please tell the radiographer immediately by pressing the buzzer provided, if you feel any heating or tingling sensations during the MRI. \nMRI and Pregnancy \nThere is no evidence to suggest that MRI scans are harmful during pregnancy. However, as a precaution, we do not usually perform MRI scans during the first 12 weeks (three months) of pregnancy unless the scan is essential. \nIf you are pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant, please inform a member of staff before your appointment. We will then speak to the doctor who referred you to confirm that an MRI scan is the most appropriate examination for you. \nAs with any diagnostic procedure, the benefits of having the scan will be carefully considered against any potential risks to ensure the examination is necessary and safe for both you and your baby. \nHow do I prepare for the procedure? \n- Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. \n- Please do not eat for 2 hours before your appointment.
