central figureis a lovely,warm-hearted girl in her late teens.A genial English sun shines on her sweethead, and on that of a comrade in youth, beauty and virtue, with whose life hcrs issoon merged.Wealth, fashionable toilettes, adancing party in a magnificent British coun-try home, both girls belles—we seem in thosefirst chapters to be looking at life throughJane Austen's eyes, focussed with Jane Aus-ten's witty realism on rich and prosperouspeople in a perfectly stable world. \nIn 1944,when Den-mark was still lockedinto the windowlessNazi jail,a novel waspublished in Copen-hagen which causeda tremendous stiramong Danish andother European read-ers.People guessed \nDoROTHY CANFIELD \nthe name on the title page—quite unknown—to be a pseudonym. The novel was of su-perlatively fine literary quality, written withdistinction in an exquisite style, telling a fas-cinating story of mystery, adventure and pureyoung love. \nYet,from the very first, there is peril suchas Jane Austen and her generation neverdreamed of.Nor does the reader dream ofit in the beginning. He does,it is true, haveat times a faint premonition of danger.Itis as though, glancing over his shoulder, hehad glimpsed a sinister shadow, back of thegaiety of the young dancers. But before hecan turn around to fix his eyes on it,thesunshine and light-heartedness of the sceneflood it out of sight. \nBut delighted Danes quickly recognizedthat here, thinly veiled, was something farmore than the enchanting narrative it was onthe surface. One European critic,comment-ing guardedly(with an eye on the Gestapo)on the consummate skill of the author inwriting one thing brilliantly and meaninganother,said:\"This is tight-rope walkingwithout staff or safety net.One follows thesport with breathless excitement.\"The sportwas, would the Nazis see what the Danes sawplainly, that this novel, which kept everyreader turning the pages faster and faster tosee what happened, was also a bold, nobleand total condemnation of the conquerorsin whose power Denmark then lay helpless? If they did see this, could they admit pub-licly that thcy recognized themselves in thepicture of those who do cvil for evil's sake?Banning the book, punishment of the dar-ing author would have been just such aconfession. \nSmiling,charmed,falling more and morein love with these two delightful girls, thereader turns the pages of the first part ofthis swift-fowing narrative, unsuspecting一or almost.Increasingly strange things hap-pen around the two heroines, yes—but thoseevents are absorbingly interesting.Hescarcely notices that the sinister shadow isdrifting closer and closer till all at once, whenit looms up as int","cbCaiow2OLe5FKfi","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiow2OLe5FKfi","pdf",2846961,36,"English","# THE ANGELIC AVENGERS\n## A Review
