and Mississippi,breaking them up later and rebuilding them into settlers'cabins;others went no farther than Cincinnati,which was already callingitself\"The Queen City of the West.\"Ann Ross was born thereon November 17,1813,the fourth of five children in the family ofRichard Ross,a Methodist preacher,and his wife Elizabeth TaylorRoss.  \nCincinnati at heart and in spirit was a frontier town built bypioneers,and Ann caught their spirit and courage early.Even inchildhood she showed qualities of leadership as she decided thegames for her playmates and captained every undertaking.  \nAttractive,though never considered beautiful,she drew atten-tion unconsciously through her physical appearance as well asthrough her personality.Small,scarcely five feet,she was gracefulin her movements,quick in perception and response,her dark wide-set eyes glowing with alertness.  \nHer father’s favorite always,he delighted in having her waitingfor him after the evening meeting,when he came home with nervesso taut he had to let himself \"run down\"before he could attemptto sleep.His long discourses drilled his children in close listeningand logical thinking—a boon to Ann all her
