small boats have an irrestistible appeal. This collectionof stories from a small part of the coast represents muchpainstaking research and can be enjoyed by ail whether theyare the keenest of sailors or simply admirers of a bygoneage. \nMorecambe Bay is a peculiar place.Even a cursorystudy of the chart reveals shallow waters, vast areas ofdrying banks, and a big tidal range with strong streams. When one superimposes the south western aspect of theBay,all the ingredients for difficult sailing conditions arebrought together. It is not, therefore, surprising that overthe years the vessels and the men who sail them haveaquired a reputation of rugged seaworthiness. Some ofthis spirit can be felt in these pages. \nMany areas around our coasts have produced their owntypical craft usually to meet the requirements cf the localfishing community. The advent of sailing for pleasure hadlittle effect at first on the design and construction of boatsand the early yachts were fundamentally working hulls withsome concessions to comfort. \nThe building and sailing of these vessels is the themeof this book but its principal value is as a permanent recordof the skill and achievement of the men who accepted thechallenge of Morecambe Bay under sail. \nJOHN C.DUERDEN,Chairman,Morecambe Bay Sailing Association. \nC \nIndex \nPage \n1.
