In Holliday, Oregon, anything goes, because every holiday is celebrated and shared—together, as a community.  \nFor Moonlight, Menorahs and Mistletoe, the focus is on Hanukkah, a holiday aglow with candles, vibrant with music and dreidels and people frying up platters of latkes or sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts—yum!). Usually there’s a retelling of the story of King Antiochus’s attempt to abolish Judaism and the Maccabees’victory over his army against all odds. We celebrate the miracle that one small jar of oil, enough to provide just twenty-four hours’worth of flame, lasted eight nights. But it’s more than that.  \nThe light-filled holiday reminds us to appreciate and protect our uniqueness—other people’s, as well—and never to allow a tyrant of any size to minimize or homogenize or erase us. Sometimes that tyrant is our own fear. Especially the fear of letting someone see who we really are.  \nFor a long time now, both Eden Berman and Gideon Bowen have been afraid to live fully or love passionately.
