hostile to cer-tain phases of present-day thought and life,Modern-ism is a reaction favorable to them. \nModernism has had a long history. It began withIbn Ezra,a wandering scholar,a Spanish Jew,wholived in the twelfth century after ChristUp to histime it had been believed without question by bothJews and Christians that Moses was the author ofthe first five books of the Bible, although in the lastone of the five,an account is given of Moses'deathand burial. It was supposed that he had been divine-ly permitted to anticipate this advent and describe itin advance. The great Jewish writers,Philo andJosephus, had believed that Moses wrote these books.Jesus had quoted from them and called Moses theauthor,a fact which Fundamentalists still regard asconvincing proof of their Mosaic authorship. \nSeries 1 No.3 \nAddress Delivered Sunday,November I,1925 \nPrice 10 Cents \nBut Ibn Ezra doubted. He discovered in Genesisreferences to events which according to the Bibleitself did not occur until long after Moses's time. This was the beginning of biblical criticism, whichwas the beginning of Modernism. It was dangerous, however,to oppose current religious opinion.IbnEzra said,\"I know a secret, but a prudent man will \nPublished byTHE LAYMEN’S LEAGUE排est iùe llnitarian hurrh550 Cathedral ParkwayNew York City \nkeep quiet.”Ibn Ezra was prudent. He kept quiet, and set the fashion followed by all succeeding Mod-ernists. \nModernism originated in a pre-scientific age, buthas been intensified by the rise of the sciences.Itbegan in Judaism, passed over into Protestantism, and had a vogue for a time in Roman Catholicism, until it was officially forbidden by a papal encyclicalletter September 8,1907. \nAmong Protestants,Modernism is widely accepted. The more advanced theological seminaries have beenModernist for years and have developed many Mod-ernists among the younger clergyIf the Funda-mentalist reaction had not set in,the Protestantchurches might in the course of a generation havebeen very largely liberalized. The work that Mod-ernism was doing by“boring from within”is nowexposed and brought into sharp contrast withorthodox Christianity. As you read the encyclicalletter against Modernism issued by Pope Pius Xyou recognize that it represents from the Catholicpoint of view precisely the protests the Fundamen-talists are making from the Protestant point of view. \n## Definition of Modernism\n\nModernism may be defined positively as that formof religious thought which atempts to preserve thespirit and the institutions of Christianity, while atthe same time seeking to apply the scientific method. \n## The Scientific Method\n\nThe scientific method has been said to consist ofthree steps:accurate observation, exact record, and \nlimited inference. The scientific method is thelaboratory methodIt ascertains facts, records facts, and reasons from facts. To the use of it we oweall the knowledge of natural forces which we nowpossess. \nThe limitation of the scientific method againstwhich religionists sometimes inveigh is this,t","cbCaic8ZBjS5darg","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic8ZBjS5darg","pdf",589878,14,"English","# RELIGION IN THE MAKING\n##
