anthology has been to select some of it tohelp to satisfy a natural interest(for girls as well as boys),and to indicate ways in which some of the chosen passagesmay suggest approaches for original creative writing on sportand other themes, particularly for“O”Level Essay work. The extracts begin with Bernard Darwin and Sir NevilleCardus, the initiators of a new kind of literary journalism towhom most sports writers of today have freely and gladlyacknowledged their debt. \nSir Neville Cardus enlivened and deepened his sports'writing by illustrations and parallels from other arts —\"theapproximation of the arts”.He spoke of an entire gallery ofcharacters being on view in the 1973 cricket season,\"classic,impressionist,pre-Raphaelite,surrealist and so on”.CliveLloyd was“classic and romantic and spectacular”,and as a\"creative batsman\"could survive comparison with the mostoriginal in any age of the game's history.A\"mixture oftradition and latest surrealism”could be found in an inningsby George Gunn which could make Cardus think of LouisArmstrong playing in the Philharmonic Orchestra while asymphony of Mozart was being performed and suddenlyimprovising to suit his mood of the moment. \nSuch is the flavour of Cardus, along with his insistencethat“the game is still rich in characters”. \nBernard Darwin's prose reflected his enthusiasm for thegame as writer and player(he was made a C.B.E.),his whimsi-cality(with apt quotations from his Dickens treasury)andthe orderliness and urbanity of his style. He had a fine giftfor portraiture,as in his studies on Vardon and Sarazen, butcould write an equally fine appraisal of a new hero—“ThatSmall Colossus:Hogan at Carnoustie”. \nIntroduction \nMany other engaging personalities are met,and a largevariety of styles and methods of literary presentation en-countered. \nThe effortless and economical style of Henry Longhurstcan open many doors for the young writer. He also writes ofsport in a larger perspective,a salutary corrective for the over-intellectualising of much sports'writing. His sense of humourand love of the eccentric in life and sport made him a muchloved figure on both sides of the Atlantic. \nThe fresh and precise writing of John Arlott, always aseeker after the unique word,is a tribute to his great know-ledge of sport and his very acute observation. This is incontrast with the blurred and emotive jargon of so muchpopular sports'journalism.Like Cardus,he is a master of theillustrative anecdote. \nGeoffrey Green, another in our gallery of enthusiasts, had for his football travels a maxim-\"Every day is Christ-mas Day”.This shows through in the freshness of his writingwhich is always illuminated by his stored impressions ofTurin,Brazil or Wembley. He has a great appreciation ofcharacter in the game and writes of Bobby Charlton's\"flow-ing skills and modesty, his integrity and example to others, both in and off the field”. \nPat Ward-Thomas evokes the special qualities of golfcourses and golf holes that have brought pleasure and appre-hens","cbCainpVjiYUD6aC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainpVjiYUD6aC","pdf",8410692,180,"English","# Introduction\n## Purpose of the
