\nThis handbook is not a grammar,properly speaking,but it givesthe essentials of the modern Western Armenian grammar,togetherwith exercises exemplifying the rules,some conversations with ex-pressions in common usage for practice,and a few pages in prose forreading and translation.It is intended to be a concise presentationof fundamentals which,when mastered,should enable the studentto understand the current language fairly well and to express himselfclearly in short sentences in an ordinary conversation.  \nThe first step is to learn the alphabet thoroughly,to know thesounds of the letters and the way in which they are pronounced inconjunction with others in words.  \nThen comes the necessity of forming a satisfactory vocabulary.It is said that about six hundred words suffice to cover the needs ofdaily speech,and that about one thousand words would enable oneto read newspapers and speak adequately.The vocabularies(Armen-ian-English and English-Armenian)given at the end of this book con-tain approximately twelve to fifteen hundred words each.Nouns—names of objects and abstractions—form the basic structure of speech;hence,their predominance.Then come the operational words:verbs,  \npronouns,prepositions,adverbs,adjectives,conjunctions,which enableus to form complete sentences with logical,co-ordinated and colorfulmeaning.  \nSpecial effort has been made to avoid going into too many gramma-tic details and exceptions,and to keep mainly to the basic rules without,however,omitting forms which the student is bound to meet in read-ing and conversation,and with which,therefore,he should not be al-together unfamiliar.  \nIn order to keep the length of this book within bounds,the ex-amples and exercises given are in Armenian with their English trans-lations;no alternate exercises have been offered in English for trans-lations into Armenian.Instead,it is suggested that the student,at theend of each exercise,translate the English back into Armenian andcompare his translation with the text.This has proved to be a practicaland helpful method.  \nTransliteration has not been used because its effectiveness as an aidto pronunciation is limited.A jumble of English letters would berequired to indicate some Armenian sounds,and this could easilyprove more confusing than helpful.We have therefore relied on thealphabet itself and the examples of English words accompanying it.With rare exceptions,the sounds of the Armenian letters will beexactly the same wherever they appear.  \nThis book,prepared at the suggestion and under the auspices ofthe Publications Committee of the Armenian General Benevolent Unionof America,is principally intended for those of Armenian descent inthis country,who have an elementary knowledge of English grammar,and who would like
