M. Badawi) assembles scholarship on major developments in 20th-century Arabic writing. It explains editorial choices for consolidated yet chapter-based bibliographies, emphasizing brevity of footnotes and English-language references. The volume organizes chapters around key literary movements and genres, including neo-classical and romantic poets, modernist poetry, the rise and diversification of the Arabic novel, the short story, Arabic drama, prose stylists, critics, Arab women writers, and poetry in the vernacular, supported by indexes and have been somewhatlimited. It was decided therefore to have separate bibliographies forindividual chapters even at the risk of some repetition. In conformity withthe other volumes of the Cambridge History of Arabic Literature contributorshave been asked, mainly for reasons of space,to reduce their footnotes as faras possible to the bare minimum and to confine their bibliographies to themore important works, although obviously some have found it easier tocomply with this request than others and, indeed,in a number of chaptersfootnotes have been omitted altogether to make room for text.Anexception to this rule has been made in the case of the last two chaptersdealing with 'Poetry in the vernacular’and ‘Arab women writers’,respectively,as these are relatively unknown fields and it was felt that afuller list of references might be of some help to scholars wishing to carryout further investigations in them.Because of the proliferation of studies ofmodern Arabic literature in French,German,Italian,Spanish,Russian, andeven Dutch and Polish, bibliographies have in general been confined toworks in the English language.Since the Short Story has emerged as amajor genre in modern Arabic literature, enjoying perhaps greaterpopularity with writers and readers alike than other genres, more space
